Analysis of hydrographic data and results numerical modeling show the occurrence upwelling associated with cyclonic meanders Brazil Current, in region known as Southeast Bight or Santos Bight. The temperature salinity distributions collected during summer winter confirm idea that meander‐induced shelf break plays an important role pumping South Atlantic Central Water from slope onto continental shelf.
There is relatively few and sparse information in the literature about Brazil Current, boundary current that closes westem border of South Atlantic Subtropical Gyre.ln this article, we present a review currently-available to give coherent overview on kinematic dynamical aspects Current along Eastem Brazilian eoast. We discuss structure terms its water mass composition vertical extension. We compile available velocity volume transport shelf break from 90S 3loS.We also address meandering eddy...
The analysis of the hydrographic data obtained during “Nordeste III” (NEIII) survey by R/V Almirante Saldanha (Brazilian Navy) between May 4 and July 12, 1986, is reported in this work. Distributions geostrophic speeds transports (relative to 1000 m) reveal North Brazil Current (NBC) other major features tropical Atlantic circulation west 30°30′W 4°S 10°30′S. well‐developed NBC appears all analyzed crossisobath sections bordering Brazilian continental slope 10°S 5°S, transporting an average...
The baroclinic structure of the Brazil Current(BC)‐Intermediate Western Boundary Current (IWBC) at 22°–23°S was investigated. A reanalysis pioneer velocity profile measurements TRANSCOBRA Experiment [ Evans and Signorini , 1985 ] revealed that BC‐IWBC system is about 75–80% baroclinic. Mapped showed flow reversal 450 m, an IWBC thickness 1200 m core velocities exceeding 0.30 s −1 . Total (baroclinic) transports for BC (southwestwards) (northeastwards) were 5.6 (4.2) Sv 3.6 (4.1) Sv,...
[1] The Brazil Current (BC) originates with the arrival and bifurcation of southernmost branch South Equatorial (sSEC) between 10–20°S. Previous climatological studies showed a stratified sSEC that resulting southern formed shallow BC - weak western boundary current. The analysis three recent synoptic surveys global model outputs challenge description continuous BC. signal near continental margin was unclear in analyses, velocity fields were dominated by mesoscale eddies. Recurrent...
We use four current meter moorings and quasi‐synoptic hydrographic observations in conjunction with a one‐dimensional quasi‐geostrophic linear stability model to investigate downstream changes the Brazil Current (BC) System between 22°S 28°S. The data set depict thickening of BC. Its vertical extension increases from 350 m at 22.7°S 850 27.9°S. Most this deepening occurs 25.5°S 27.9°S is linked bifurcation South Equatorial intermediate depths (Santos bifurcation), which adds Antarctic...
This study describes the hydrography and water masses of Santos Basin Continental Shelf (SBCS) during two hydrographic campaigns (SANAGU, SANSED) in 2019. Coastal Water (CW) is dominant mass southern portion SBCS, with relatively low salinity values (S<35.5 g kg–1), satellite data show that local precipitation river discharge could not account for observed cruises region domain. The explained by transport from south influenced Subtropical (STSW), which was La Plata River discharge. In...
The Santos Basin (SB) is the main petroliferous basin in Brazilian continental margin and one of most studied marine areas Brazil. However, historical data suggest that new efforts should be carried out to acquire quantitative biological data, especially deep sea, establish baseline essential ocean variables different ecosystems for future monitoring programs. energy company Petrobras planned executed 24 oceanographic cruises over a period 2 years assess benthic (SANSED cruise) pelagic...
The analyses of Uk'37 paleotemperatures and sedimentological parameters in box cores from the Cabo Frio upwelling zone, southeastern Brazil, were used to understand modern sedimentation as well evaluate role played by process sedimentary patterns. Three box-cores located closer area show a general trend cooling waters taking place last 700 years. Since present is dependent on local remote wind regime, phase dominating NE winds favors more effective upward transport cold thermocline level...
The aim of this work was to generate an inventory the data on radiocarbon datings obtained from sediments São Paulo Bight (southern Brazilian upper margin) and analyze in terms Late Quaternary sedimentary processes sedimentation rates. A total 238 materials collected using differents ampling procedures considered for work. rates varied less than 2 68 cm.kyr-1. highest rate values were found a low-energy (ría type) coastal system as well upwelling zones Santa Catarina Cabo Frio. lowest outer...
We investigate the dynamics of meso- and submesoscale features northern South Brazil Bight shelf region with a 500-m horizontal resolution regional model. focus on Cabo Frio upwelling center, where nutrient-rich, coastal waters are transported into mid- outer shelf, because its importance for local remote productivity.
