Significance Trillions of bacteria live in the primate gut, contributing to metabolism, immune system development, and pathogen resistance. Perturbations these are associated with metabolic autoimmune human diseases that prevalent Westernized societies. Herein, we measured gut microbial communities diet multiple species living wild, a sanctuary, full captivity. We found captivity loss dietary fiber nonhuman primates native microbiota convergence toward modern microbiome, suggesting parallel...
The recent literature on plant secondary compounds and their influence primate feeding behavior is reviewed. Many studies of nonhuman primates document the extreme selectivity that primates, particularly herbivorous species, demonstrate in food choice. Until quite recently investigators interpreted this to mean were not limited. This view has been challenged past 10 years by researchers concentrating primate–plant interaction. Chemical analyses have demonstrated parts are varying quality due...
Abstract Free‐ranging mantled howling monkey ( Alouatta palliata Gray) females experienced a regular estrus cycle averaging 16.3 days, demonstrated sexual skin changes, and participated in multiple matings before becoming pregnant. Gestation averaged 186 days. The average interval between births was 22.5 months. Sexual maturity occurred at approximately 36 42 months for males, respectively. Female age first birth about 3½ years. Births were scattered during some years clustered others. age,...
Hydrologic research is a very demanding application of fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing (DTS) in terms precision, accuracy and calibration. The physics behind the most frequently used DTS instruments are considered as they apply to four calibration methods for single-ended installations. new presented more accurate than instrument-calibrated data, achieving accuracies on order tenths degree root mean square error (RMSE) bias. Effects localized non-uniformities that violate...
A total of 54 free-ranging monkeys were captured and marked in Santa Rosa National Park, Costa Rica, during May 1985, an additional 17 March 1986. The animals darted using a blowpipe or CO 2 gun. drugs used Ketaset ® , Sernylan Telazol . was effective for Cebus capucinus but unsuccessful Alouatta palliata Ateles geoffroyi. successful A. geoffroyi is no longer commercially available. proved to be excellent alternative capture drug both
Abstract Social and ecological factors are important in shaping sexual dimorphism Anthropoidea, but there is also a tendency for body‐size canine to increase with increased body size (Rensch's rule) (Rensch: Evolution Above the Species Level . London: Methuen, 1959.) Most ecologists interpret Rensch's rule be consequence of social selective that covary size, recent claims have been advanced principally selection alone. Here we assess effects dimorphism, structure on among platyrrhine...
Abstract Dental microwear researchers consider exogenous grit or dust to be an important cause of microscopic wear on primate teeth. No study date has examined the accumulation such abrasives foods eaten by primates in forest. This investigation introduces a method collect at various heights canopy. Results from collection studies conducted research stations Ketambe Indonesia, and Hacienda La Pacifica Costa Rica indicate that 1) collects throughout canopy both open country tropical rain...
Abstract Limb, trunk, and body weight measurements were obtained for growth series of Milne‐Edwards's diademed sifaka, Propithecus diadema edwardsi , the golden‐crowned tattersalli . Similar measures also primarily adults two subspecies western sifaka: verreauxi coquereli Coquerel's Verreaux's sifaka. Ontogenetic larger‐bodied P. d. smaller‐bodied compared to evaluate whether species‐level differences in proportions result from differential extension common patterns relative growth. In...
Red-shanked doucs (Pygathrix nemaeus) are endangered, foregut-fermenting colobine primates which difficult to maintain in captivity. There critical gaps our understanding of their natural lifestyle, including dietary habits such as consumption leaves, unripe fruit, flowers, seeds, and other plant parts. is also a lack enteric adaptations, unique microflora. To address these knowledge gaps, we used the douc model study relationships between gastrointestinal microbial community structure...
Abstract Paleoprimatologists depend on relationships between form and function of teeth to reconstruct the diets fossil species. Most this work has been limited studies unworn teeth. A new approach, dental topographic analysis, allows characterization comparison worn primate Variably museum specimens have used construct species‐specific wear sequences so that measurements can be compared by stage among taxa with known differences in diet. This assumes individuals a species tend their molar...
Three species of bamboo-eating lemurs were found to be sympatric in the southeastern rain forests Madagascar. Sympatric generally differ habitat utilization or diet, but these three closely related bamboo lived same and all ate bamboo. Behavioral observation revealed that they did select different parts bamboo, chemical analyses confirmed there was a difference secondary compound content present those selections. The growing tips Cephalostachyum ef uiguieri selected by golden lemur...
Abstract One problem with dental microwear analyses of museum material is that investigators can never be sure the diets animals in question. An obvious solution to this work live animals. Recent laboratory primates has shown high resolution impressions obtained from The purpose study was use similar methods begin document rates and patterns for wild. Thirty‐three Alouatta palliata were captured during wet season at Hacienda La Pacifica near Canas, Costa Rica. Dental taken epoxy casts teeth...
Fecal samples from 155 mantled howling monkeys (Alouatta palliata palliata) examined at Centro Ecologico La Pacifica, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, revealed 75 (48%) had parasitic infections. A sampling of nine Santa Rosa National Park, Rica indicated only one infected animal (11%). Only three 19 (16%) spider (Ateles geoffroyi) also were infected. Controrchis biliophilus, Trypanoxyuris minutus, unidentified strongylid eggs and Isospora sp. oocysts found. Three Pacifica died for adult...
We investigated the prevalence of arthropod-borne viral diseases in a population free-ranging mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) Costa Rica 1998. Blood samples were opportunistically collected from anesthetized for another study. Serology was performed on 64 individuals to assess exposure this vesicular stomatitis virus, equine encephalitis viruses, Mayaro St. Louis yellow fever and dengue virus. The New Jersey serotype (VSV-NJ) only pathogen which tested positive (44% [28/64]). This...
