This paper describes the evaporative system used to cool silicon detector structures of inner sub-detectors ATLAS experiment at CERN Large Hadron Collider. The motivation for an system, its design and construction are discussed. In detail particular requirements detector, technical choices qualification manufacture final components addressed. Finally results initial operational tests reported. Although entire described, focuses on on-detector aspects. Details cooling plant will be discussed...
Abstract The response of a polarographic oxygen electrode to step change and an exponential in bulk concentration was studied theoretically experimentally for the case where there is significant liquid film resistance at outer side membrane‐covered electrode. probe has been described by mathematical model which takes into account mass transfer through membrane. It shown that substantial error could be introduced neglecting resistance. A test procedure suggested evaluate significance.
Abstract The response of a polarographic oxygen electrode to step change and an exponential in bulk concentration was studied theoretically experimentally for the case where there is significant liquid film resistance at outerside membrane‐covered electrode. probe has been described considering start‐up period changes (the time that will elapse before new level established and/or volumetric mass transfer coefficient k L regains its steady‐state value after gas supply opened fermentor). A...
We describe a combined ultrasonic instrument for gas flow metering and continuous real-time binary composition measurements. The measurement mixture analysis algorithm employs sound velocity measurements in two directions combination with of the pressure temperature process mixture.
Abstract The silicon tracker of the ATLAS experiment at CERN Large Hadron Collider will operate around –15°C to minimize effects radiation damage. present cooling system is based on a conventional evaporative circuit, removing 60 kW heat dissipated by sensors and their local electronics. compressors in circuit have proved less reliable than originally hoped, be replaced with thermosiphon. working principle thermosiphon uses gravity circulate coolant without any mechanical components...
We investigate and address the performance limitations of ATLAS silicon tracker fluorocarbon evaporative cooling system operation in circuits barrel microstrip (SCT) sub-detector. In these minimum achievable evaporation temperatures with C3F8 were higher than original specification, thought to allow an insufficient safety margin against thermal runaway detector modules subject a radiation dose initially foreseen for 10 years at LHC.

Precision sound velocity measurements can simultaneously determine binary gas composition and flow. We have developed an analyzer with custom electronics, currently in use the ATLAS inner detector, numerous potential applications. The instrument has demonstrated ~0.3% mixture precision for C3F8/C2F6 mixtures < 10-4 resolution N2/C3F8 mixtures. Moderate high flow versions of resolutions +/- 2% F.S. flows up to 250 l.min-1, 1.9% linear velocities 15 ms-1; latter approaching that expected...
We describe a combined ultrasonic instrument for continuous gas flow measurement and simultaneous real-time binary mixture analysis. In the instrument, sound bursts are transmitted in opposite directions, which may be aligned with path or at an angle to it, latter configuration being best adapted high rates. The analysis algorithm exploits phenomenon whereby velocity known temperature pressure is unique function of molar concentration two components. central possible upgrade present ATLAS...

The new generation of silicon detectors for particle physics requires very reduced mass and high resistance to radiations with limited access the detector maintenance. Silicon Pixel Detector (SPD) is one 18 ALICE (A Large Io Collider Experiment) experiment at Hadron (LHC) CERN. It constitute two innermost layers Inner Tracking System (ITS) it closest th interaction point.
Abstract This paper deals with a simple model of steady state recrystallization in double crystallizer. Equations describing the particle size distribution are formulated and solved. The relations between resulting working conditions crystallizer discussed.
