Abstract Human modification of forests is the main threat to woodpeckers due their ecological reliance on forest structure. However, little known how woodpecker species respond habitat and land-use change in Neotropics. In 2018, we determined nest-site selection by Mexican endemic Melanerpes chrysogenys (Golden-cheeked Woodpecker) protected old-growth tropical dry non-urban human settlements evaluate may alter species. We found that tree substrate surrounding vegetation differed between...

Intestinal bacteria play an important role in animal health. They extract and process nutrients present their host's diet, help to develop immune system, recycle organic compounds, water, minerals. The gut bacterial diversity is poorly known wild animals. This study the first description of along whole intestine a bird (Passer domesticus). Pyrose- quencing 16S rRNA gene unveiled high diversity, distributed 11 phyla. most abundant groups were Pro- teobacteria Firmicutes. Bacterial was greater...

Abstract Large areas of tropical moist forests have been converted to cattle pastures, generating complex landscapes where different habitats are represented by small patches with an uneven spatial distribution. Here, we describe how bird communities respond the elements present in a livestock landscape that was originally dominated forest. We surveyed six habitats: open pastures shrubs, early‐ and middle‐secondary forests, mature forest, invaded bracken ferns ( Pteridium aquilinum ). Bird...

We studied the diet of Acorn Woodpeckers (Melanerpes formicivorus) at La Primavera Forest, Jalisco, Mexico. This resident species had a diverse throughout all seasons. The included acorns Quercus viminea, Q. castanea, and laeta, which were stored primarily in granaries live trunks pine (Pinus spp.) trees. They also consumed magnoliifolia resinosa by piercing eating just central part seed. did not use from oak same proportion as available. fed seasonally on insects (Coleoptera Lepidoptera) tree sap.

Alien invasive species pose a major threat to socioecological systems worldwide. Native avian frugivores may enhance the dispersal and germination success of exotic plants introduced for ornamental motives. In this study, we investigated role native Rufous-backed Robin ( Turdus rufopalliatus) as potential agent worldwide Brazilian pepper-tree Schinus terebinthifolius). We evaluated gut transit time mean retention birds feeding on plant fruits compared rate probability intact fruits, peeled...

Arthropods are hummingbirds’ principal source of nitrogen, fatty acids, and micronutrients. Despite the nutritional importance arthropods for hummingbirds, our understanding factors influencing their consumption relative role as an energy remains limited. Here, we aimed to describe use by a hummingbird ensemble in seasonal temperate mountain ecosystem West Mexico during one annual cycle. We compared arthropod capture attempt rates among six different humming species. Also, investigated...
