We suggest a new algorithm to remove systematic effects in large set of lightcurves obtained by photometric survey. The can effects, like the ones associated with atmospheric extinction, detector efficiency, or PSF changes over detector. works without any prior knowledge as long they linearly appear many stars sample. approach, which was originally developed extinction is based on lower rank approximation matrices, an approach already suggested and used chemometrics, for example. proposed...
We introduce an algorithm that, given n objects, learns a similarity matrix over all n^2 pairs, from crowdsourced data alone. The samples responses to adaptively chosen triplet-based relative-similarity queries. Each query has the form "is object 'a' more similar 'b' or 'c'?" and is be maximally informative preceding responses. output embedding of objects into Euclidean space (like MDS); we refer this as "crowd kernel." SVMs reveal that crowd kernel captures prominent subtle features across...
We develop an axiomatic theory of information acquisition that captures the idea constant marginal costs in production: cost generating two independent signals is sum their costs, and a signal with probability half its original cost. Together Blackwell monotonicity continuity condition, these axioms determine up to vector parameters. These parameters have clear economic interpretation difficulty distinguishing states. (JEL D82, D83)
Social learning is the updating of beliefs based on observation others. Such can lead to efficient aggregation information, but also inaccurate decisions, fragility mass behaviors, and, in case information cascades, complete blockage learning. We review theory cascades and social discuss important themes, insights, applications this literature as it has developed over last 30 years. highlight open questions promising directions for further theoretical empirical exploration. Context. The μ Arae planetary system is fairly complex, because it contains two already known planets, b with days and c , a third companion on wide, but still poorly defined, orbit.
We report the detection of two very eccentric planets orbiting HD 4113 and 156846 with CORALIE Echelle spectrograph mounted on 1.2-m Euler Swiss telescope at La Silla. The first planet, b, has minimum mass ± , a period 0.21 days an eccentricity 0.02. It orbits metal rich G5V star AU, which displays additional radial velocity drift 28 m s-1 yr-1 observed during 8 years. combination radial-velocity data non-detection any main sequence stellar companion in our high contrast images, taken VLT...
We consider a group of strategic agents who must each repeatedly take one two possible actions. They learn which the actions is preferable from initial private signals, and by observing their neighbors in social network. show that question whether or not efficiently depends on topology In particular, we identify geometric "egalitarianism" condition network guarantees learning infinite networks, with high probability large finite any equilibrium. also give examples non-egalitarian networks...
We survey a range of models opinion exchange. From the introduction: "The exchange opinions between individuals is fundamental social interaction... Moreover, many in this field are an excellent playground for mathematicians, especially those working probability, algorithms and combinatorics. The goal to introduce such discrete mathematics, information theory, optimization, probability statistics."
An information cascade is a situation in which an agent who observes others chooses the same action irrespective of value agent's private signal.Theoretical models have found that cascades result poor aggregation, inaccurate decisions, and fragility mass behaviors. We review theory social learning. Our goal to describe relatively integrated accessible way more important themes, insights applications literature as it has developed over last thirty years. We also highlight open questions...
The mu Ara planetary system is rather complex: It contains two already known planets, b with P=640 days and c P=9.64 days, a third companion on wide but still poorly defined orbit. Even three planets in the system, data points keep anomalously high dispersion around fitted solution. residuals are only partially due to strong p-mode oscillations of host star. We have therefore studied this paper possible presence fourth planet system. During past years we carried out additional extremely...
We report the detection of a double planetary system around HD 140718 as well discovery two long period and massive planets orbiting 171238 204313. Those discoveries were made with CORALIE Echelle spectrograph mounted on 1.2-m Euler Swiss telescope located at La Silla Observatory, Chile. The nearby G9 dwarf 147018 is composed an eccentric inner planet (e=0.47) twice mass Jupiter (2.1 MJup ) orbital 44.24 days. outer even more (6.6 MJup) slightly orbit (e=0.13) 1008 has minimum 2.6 MJup, 1523...
We consider a group of Bayesian agents who try to estimate state the world $\theta$ through interaction on social network. Each agent $v$ initially receives private measurement $\theta$: number $S_v$ picked from Gaussian distribution with mean and standard deviation one. Then, in each discrete time iteration, reveals its neighbors, and, observing neighbors' actions, updates belief using Bayes' Law. This process aggregates information efficiently, sense that all converge they would have, had...
Building on Pomatto, Strack, and Tamuz (2020), we identify a tight condition for when background risk can induce first-order stochastic dominance. Using this condition, show that under plausible levels of risk, no theory choice simultaneously satisfy the following three economic postulates: (i) decision-makers are averse over small gambles, (ii) their preferences respect dominance, (iii) they account risk. This impossibility result applies to expected utility theory, prospect rank-dependent...
In a misspecified social learning setting, agents are condescending if they perceive their peers as having private information that is of lower quality than it in reality. Applying this to standard sequential model, we show outcomes improve when mildly condescending. contrast, too much condescension leads worse outcomes, does anti‐condescension.
We study finite normal-form games under a narrow bracketing assumption: when players play several simultaneously, they consider each one separately. show that mild additional assumptions, must either Nash equilibria, logit quantal response or their generalizations, which capture with various risk attitudes.
The expectation is an example of a descriptive statistic that monotone with respect to stochastic dominance, and additive for sums independent random variables. We provide complete characterization such statistics, explore number applications models individual group decision‐making. These include representation stationary time preferences, extending the work Fishburn Rubinstein (1982) lotteries. This extension offers new perspective on risk attitudes toward time, as well aggregation multiple...
We present a new algorithm, Eclipsing Binary Automated Solver (EBAS), to analyse light curves of eclipsing binaries. The algorithm is designed large numbers curves, and therefore based on the relatively fast ebop code. To facilitate search for best solution, EBAS uses two parameter transformations. Instead radii stellar components, sum their ratio, while inclination transformed into impact parameter. replace human visual assessment, we introduce 'alarm' goodness-of-fit statistic that takes...
