This article presents the first results of river ice cover observation with Sentinel-1 data for Vistula (Poland). To our best knowledge this is study when have been used to monitor changes during whole season phenomena. Frequent acquisition allowed detect every 3-5 days. We an algorithm based on log likelihood change statistic, which implemented in Toolbox. The optimal thresholds values chosen empirically. observed high correlation between snow wetness and visibility underneath.
The assessment and mapping of riverine flood hazards risks is recognized by many countries as an important tool for characterizing floods developing management plans. Often, however, these plans give attention primarily to open-water floods, with ice-jam being mostly afterthought once have been drafted. In some Nordic regions, can be more severe than floodwater levels often exceeding the same return periods. Hence, it imperative that flooding due river ice processes considered in This also...
Despite ubiquitous warming, the lower Oder River typically freezes over almost every year. Ice jams may occur during freeze-up and ice cover breakup phases, particularly in middle reaches of river, with weirs piers. The slush blocks accumulate to form jams, leading backwater effects substantial water level rise. small bottom slope tidal backflow from Baltic Sea enhance formation cold weather conditions, jeopardizing dikes. Therefore, development an jam flood forecasting system for is much...
Abstract Winter season temperatures are becoming warmer. However, the transformation of ice regime on Vistula River in Toruń has also been affected by river engineering. In particular, construction and operation Włocławek Dam had a significant impact processes. The article presents results an analysis determining contribution natural anthropogenic factors to duration phenomena cover city Toruń. Compared end nineteenth century, there reduction from 88 53 days 40 7 (in period 1882-2011)....
The lower stretch of the Vistula is most ice-jammed river section on North European Plain. Since 1982, structure hanging dams has been studied by means a mechanical non-core sampler. In this article, selected field research results dams' and degree filling cross with ice obtained during surface ice-jam events in years 1995–2014 are presented, along an explanation their causes. Surface jams occurred spring snowmelt surges breakups also freeze-up ice-covered periods. Their main cause was...
Abstract Our first information of ice cover on the Vistula River in Poland dates from Middle Ages. However, only since 19 th century have continuous observations been available. This study makes use a data series, obtained mainly IMGW (Institute Meteorology and Water Management), covering years 1861-2003 for phenomena 1814-2003 cover. Considerable shortening has observed duration both (from 60-120 days to 30-80 days) 40-100 20-60 days). These trends correspond well with trend winter...
Satellite SAR data are a unique source of information about river ice since the microwaves penetrate through clouds as well snow and cover. The influence number polarization channels on nature amount is, however, not yet fully investigated. article intends to compare quad-pol dual-pol data. studied areas include two rivers with different types cover – Peace River in Canada Vistula Poland. We used RADARSAT-2 Single Look Complex (SLC) comparison methods separability analysis (Hellinger...
The article synthesises the results from observations of ice phenomena on Warta River in Uniejów years 1947−2012. From beginning 1980s average time, yearly perspective, which river was frozen over two months, with cover appearing almost annualy. longest are were 1947, 1954−1955, 1962−1964 and 1979, coincides occurrences coldest winters this region Poland. research shows however, that vicinity Uniejów, determined not only by climate factors, but also, a great extent, Jeziorsko Reservoir, very...
Abstract The article presents changes in the course of ice phenomena on Lake Morskie Oko over 50 years. It comprises detailed data main parameters regime lake years 1963–1970. Such a reference period yielded substantial differences obtained values trends comparison with 1971–2010, which is most common literature. differed substantially from those describing and change – scaled to year analysed was about half size. Attention also drawn practical aspect duration thickness cover lake. In...
The article presents the results of research into reasons for temporal variability in tourist traffic volume most visited national park Poland 2021 – a record year terms visitor numbers. Data on daily sales admission tickets were used alongside meteorological data, supported by PS IMAGO PRO software multiple linear regression analysis. demonstrate that did not only depend occurrence weekends, public holidays and summer holiday season, but also number factors. significance factors varied both...
This paper presents the results of research on correlation between bicycle traffic volume (number bicycles per day detected by counters) in Toruń and a selection meteorological elements. The analysis covered years 2019–21 data was sourced from Municipal Roads Authority meteomodel.pl. Using IBM SPSS Statistics, models were developed to illustrate influence weather conditions different periods year. lowest January (on average N=709 bikes recorded day) highest July (N=4533). period June until...
