Phytoplankton deal with metal toxicity using a variety of biochemical strategies. One the strategies involves glutathione (GSH) and phytochelatins (PCs), which are metal‐binding thiol peptides produced by eukaryotes these compounds have been related to several intracellular functions, including detoxification, homeostasis, resistance protection against oxidative stress. This paper assesses our state knowledge on production PCs GSH marine phytoplankton in laboratory field conditions possible...

The majority of the analytical methods for steroids in marine sediments are laborious and time consuming involve use large volumes organic (frequently chlorinated) solvents. A method has been developed utilising ethanol extraction with a rapid alumina-ethanol elution clean up, providing an environmentally friendly inexpensive alternative. Recoveries (coprostanol, epicoprostanol, cholesterol, cholestanol, 5alpha-coprostanone 5beta-coprostanone) ranged from 70 to 93% compared favourably more...

The present study contributes to the knowledge of biogeochemistry Pb, Cd, Cu, and Ni in Mediterranean Thau Lagoon, southern France, which is an important shellfish farming system. concentrations metals were determined sediment cores overlying waters using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Particular attention was given determination dissolved Cu species because their dual role as essential nutrient toxicant planktonic organisms. Dissolved speciation diffusive gradient thin-film...

Abstract Amazonian aquatic systems are usually associated with pristine waters, however, irregular urban occupation of the hydrographic basins and sewerage deficiencies may lead to point diffuse contamination. Sewage contamination in intertidal surface sediments from Guajará Estuary, Brazilian Amazon coast, was evaluated using a set steroids as biomarkers. Sediments collected along urbanized margin were also analyzed for chlorophyll a, total organic carbon grain sizes. Coprostanol, main...

Shrimp farming has been associated with eutrophication due to the generation of effluents enriched organic matter and nutrients. Phosphorus (P) distribution was investigated in Coreaú River Estuary (NE Brazil) using surface sediments sediment cores. In sediments, total P concentrations ranged from 349.2 633.5 μg g-1 (mean = 465.2) were about three times lower than those other Brazilian estuaries impacted by larger shrimp cultures. The predominance forms followed sequence: iron-bound (Fe-P,...
