Site characterisation is a cornerstone of geotechnical and rock engineering. “Data-driven site characterisation” refers to any methodology that relies solely on measured data, both site-specific data collected for the current project existing type from past stages same or projects at site, neighbouring sites, beyond. It an open question what data-driven (DDSC) can achieve how useful are outcomes practice, but this “value data” major interest given rapid pace digital transformation in many...

The nonlinear, history-dependent macroscopic behavior of a granular material is rooted in the micromechanics between constituent particles and irreversible, plastic deformations reflected by changes microstructure. discrete element method (DEM) can predict evolution microstructure resulting from interparticle interactions. However, micromechanical parameters at contact particle levels are generally unknown because diversity materials with respect to their surfaces, shapes, disorder...

Site characterization is one of the most crucial steps for decision making in geotechnical engineering and to fullest extent possible should be conducted based on objective data. The current reliance judgment interpret data directly cannot exploit rapid growth data, machine learning, other digital technologies. The calibration of discrete element method (DEM) simulations is typically accomplished in a trial-and-error manner. It generally lacks objectivity and filled with uncertainties. To deal these issues, the sequential quasi-Monte Carlo (SQMC) filter employed as novel approach to calibrating DEM models granular materials. Within Bayesian framework, posterior probability density functions (PDFs) micromechanical parameters, conditioned experimentally obtained stress–strain behavior soils, are...
