Abstract The transport of meltwater through porous snow is a fundamental process in hydrology that remains poorly understood but essential for more robust predictions how the cryosphere will respond under climate change. Here, we propose continuum model resolves nonlinear coupling preferential melt flow and nonequilibrium thermodynamics ice‐melt phase change at Darcy scale. We assume commonly observed unstable infiltration due to gravity fingering instability capture it using modified...

A simple, low cost, liquid-core waveguide polarimeter is presented. The rotation of polarized light was measured after passing through a hollow fiber containing the chiral solution interest. Sensitivity found to scale with length. For compactness, can be curled into right-angle figure 8 configuration and this eliminated any phase effects that would otherwise introduced. limit detection 0.3mM for both (S)-(−)-limonene (R)-(+)-limonene using 220.8cm long run time approximately 30s core volume 38.9μl.

Gravity-driven flow of water into unsaturated porous media can form preferential pathways due to the gravity fingering instability. Here, we consider this process in a subfreezing medium using numerical simulations. We find that macroscopic infiltration rate be well predicted by freezing Damk\"ohler number. In contrast classical instability, introduction problem gives rise new regime which secondary between initial channels. This instability homogenizes otherwise channelized field and...

In liquid inkjet printing, a critical quality issue is the coalescence of ink on media surface. This paper describes technique for quantifying using an automated print analysis system. measures spatial variability reflectance caused by coalescence. Uniformity compared in test samples printed with different printing technologies. The was used to study effects coatings magnitude printing. roles surface tension ink, energy and rate absorption are examined insight into mechanisms

The problem of back-scattered coherent noise being interpreted as reflector energy is becoming more common, especially in the North Sea, due to increased density rigs, support versels, seafloor debris, etc. almost certainly present majority modern marine surveys but usually goes unnoticed and either manifests itself a 'phantom' event or degrades stack its effect on velocity analysis.

Abstract Biological filtration systems offer a sustainable alternative to existing engineered solutions. In this computational work, we seek optimize the surface coverage by an array of hairs capture particles in channels. A variety aquatic organisms rely on arrays interact with their fluidic environments. The hair functionality can vary from sensing smelling, flow control depending species considered. Among those are filter-feeders that suspension-feeding, one most widespread feeding...

Inkjet receiver coatings used in state of the art inkjet media are often constructed as water insoluble hydrogels. Hydrogel formed from dissolution a soluble and polymer blend into common carrier solvent shows dramatic effect morphology with air temperature drying rate coating process. The changes measured physical attributes shown to have pronounced on print quality typical print. Previously, little, if any, work has been published linking important phase structures image attributes. author...
