Critical algorithm scholarship has demonstrated the difficulties of attributing accountability for actions and effects algorithmic systems. In this commentary, we argue that cannot stop at denouncing lack algorithms their but must engage broader systems distributed agencies exist within; including standards, regulations, technologies, social relations. To end, explore in “the Generated Detective,” an algorithmically generated comic. Taking up mantle detectives ourselves, investigate relation...
In this paper, we shed light on the mundane performance of market-logics in public educational settings by focusing municipality websites Skåne County, Sweden, that inform parents about local school choice policies and procedures. We build existing knowledge importance systems. The aim paper is to 1) identify different ways which Swedish municipalities configure 2) relate these configurations ideas purpose education. draw theoretical insights from Science Technology Studies (STS) how...
In computer supported outbreak detection, a statistical method is applied to collection of cases detect any excess for particular disease. Whether detected aberration true decided by human expert. We present technical framework designed and implemented at the Swedish Institute Infectious Disease Control where database case reports large number infectious diseases can be processed using one or more methods selected user. Based on information, such as diagnosis date, different algorithms...
Experiments using a microsimulation platform show that vaccination against pandemic H1N1 influenza is highly cost-effective. Swedish society may reduce the costs of by about SEK 2.5 billion (approximately EUR 250 million) if at least 60 per cent population vaccinated, even related to death cases are excluded. The cost reduction primarily results from reduced absenteeism. These preliminary and based on comprehensive assumptions infectiousness morbidity pandemic, which uncertain in current situation.
Research is often inspired by visions of the future. These can take on various narrative forms, and fall anywhere along spectrum from utopian to dystopian.Even though we recognize importance such help us shape research questions inspire rich design spaces be explored, opportunity discuss them rarely given in a context.Imagine how civilization will have changed 15 years. What your vision for systems that supporting sustainability time?Which transformational changes occurred mean time allow...
Politically, Europe has been unable to address itself a constituted polity and people as more than an agglomeration of nation-states. From the resurgence nationalisms crisis single currency unprecedented decision member state leave European Union (EU), core questions about future have rearticulated: Who are Europe? Is there identity? What does it mean say, “I am European?” Where begin end? can legitimately claim be part “European” people? The special issue (SI) seeks contest dominant...
Information and communication technologies are not value-neutral tools that reflect reality; they privilege some forms of action, limit others. We analyze reports describing the design, development, testing evaluation a European Commission co-funded syndromic surveillance project called SIDARTHa (System for on Detection Analysis Risks Threats to Health). show construct concept health threat as sudden, unexpected event with potential cause severe harm one requires public response aided by...
Abstract In this article, we suggest approaching writing as a vulnerable practice marked by an unstable boundary between bodies: bodies of text and writers. We present exercise‐method that refer to Monster Writing, which have developed in order engage with these instabilities well address experiences difficulty, anxiety uncertainty relation the process. Though process can at times be exciting thrilling, other perhaps little tedious mundane, for some it also presents (more than) occasional...
The revolution, which is quite recent, brought about by digital convergence and connected objects, has enabled a homogenisation of data types would historically have been considered as different, for example: data, texts, sound, still images, moving images. This encouraged the Big Data phenomenon, volume includes two related parameters: quantity frequency acquisition; can extend far exhaustivity be up to including real time. This Special Issue features series articles that examine its uses...
Abstract Beck and Sznaider call on ‘methodological cosmopolitanism’ to transcend methodological nationalism account for an increasingly cosmopolitanized reality. We take up their challenge by drawing our experiences of conducting a collaborative ethnography changes in the production population statistics within between European national international statistical institutes. Drawing debates science technology studies, we depart from some conceptual presuppositions cosmopolitanism define...
Opportunities for innovation in view of three complex problems faced by the UAE health care providers are described. The information dissemination problem could be approached creating new channels providing population with public information. These precisely ones typically used so-called syndromic surveillance, including care-related data from communicable disease spread indicators, but also tweets and blog posts, example. Syndromic surveillance likewise assist authorities addressing...
In research and development of information communication technologies for sustainability, there is a strong belief that human behaviour can be monitored at the individual level to generate different signals, these signals used influence individuals behave differently. We analyse Seventh Framework Programme policy documents published by European Commission, descriptions projects granted funding from it, highlight uncritical application surveillance change behaviour. We argue EU-financed dealing...
This article presents a unique, large-scale and spatially explicit microsimulation model that uses official anonymized register data collected from all individuals living in Sweden. Individuals are connected to households workplaces represent crucial links the Swedish social contact network. enables significant policy experiments domain of epidemic outbreaks. Development started 2004 at Institute for Infectious Disease Control (SMI) Solna, Sweden with goal creating tool testing effects...
In this paper, I examine design documents from three different ICT and development projects. argue that they present intersecting visions of sustainability entailing the wide-spread use ICT, describe properties users compatible with such provide ways judging users. documents, inhabitants are made individually responsible for living sustainably, surveillance is positioned as integral to future help ICT. Underlying visions, identify a translation process captures traces inhabitants' lives,...
In the early 2000s, authorities in Sweden and Denmark recognised that their personal identification numbers were about to run out but followed different interventions resolve same issue. this paper, I start from these cases analyse as methods for knowing governing populations. draw on two assertions study of within STS: Methods are performative, they produce multiple objects realities. demonstrate how such enact individuals populations simultaneously, identify a fundamental tension between...
Whilst STS has long studied lab work, the past few years have also seen introduction of labs as social formations for doing enquiry. But what kind contributions to pedagogy, particularly in technical universities, can inspired university make? We respond need more deeply understand how teaching may be practiced a site experimentation by describing work ETHOS Lab, our critical feminist at IT University Copenhagen, ‘enlivening’. Using three events from 2017–2020 case studies, we identify both...
We develop the concept of methods as 'forces subjectivation' in relation to experiments we have encountered a study government for generating official population statistics. These problematise subjects traditional based on paper questionnaires and offer new digital technologies data sources possible solutions. reflect these recent work sociological research inventive live. What this identifies questions take up think about two ways. One concerns how method offered solutions problematic...
