Galeus melastomus is the most common Pentanchidae in Mediterranean Sea. A scavenger and opportunistic feeder, despite wide distribution, little known about its feeding habits Italian waters. The main purpose of this study was to investigate diet blackmouth catshark by analysing stomach contents. specimens analysed were obtained from five populations Tyrrhenian Ionian Seas, collected a depth between 40 700 m. total 259 stomachs analysed. contents grouped into macro-categories identified...

Marine ecosystems are increasingly threatened by pollutants, including trace elements (TEs) such as heavy metals, which bioaccumulate and pose risks to both marine fauna human health. Sharks rays particularly susceptible metal uptake retention, making them sentinel species for assessing environmental contamination. This study investigated the bioaccumulation of 16 TEs across 12 elasmobranch sampled from Ionian Tyrrhenian coasts Calabria, southern Italy, over an 11-year period. Muscle tissue...

The nematode Spinitectus inermis (Zeder, 1800), a specific gastrointestinal parasite of Anguilla anguilla, has been recorded for the first time in Italian Peninsula. study was conducted Mesima River, located southwestern part Calabria region (southern Italy). Over five-month period, 162 specimens European eel were sampled, revealing an overall prevalence 47.53%, mean intensity 9.51 (±13.88), and abundance 4.55 (±10.69). present throughout five months analyzed, with rates ranging from 32.0%...

Parasitological, hematological, and ecotoxicological analyses were carried out on a population of lesser spotted dogfish Scyliorhinus canicula from the central Mediterranean Sea. Parasitological highlighted poor helminthic community, highly dominated by single taxon represented cestode Nybelinia sp. No differences in parasitic load between females males observed. Hematological showed that number leukocytes was significantly lower sharks resulted parasitism, this could be due to ability some...

We investigated the endo- and ectoparasitic fauna of 45 specimens Rattus rattus 44 Mus musculus collected in Sicily. This study is second survey parasitic these 2 rodent species on this Mediterranean island. Four nematode species, 1 cestode flea tick were recovered from R. rattus. Six 3 digenean M. musculus. As noted other western islands, both show a depauperate parasite richness comparison with continental situations.

Host traits can significantly influence patterns of infection and disease. Here, we studied the helminths par - asitizing Italian edible frog Pelophylax kl. hispanicus, giving special attention to relationship between parasites host such as sex, snout vent length, weight body condition. The helminth community was composed seven species: three trematode species (Diplodiscus subclavatus, Gorgodera cygnoides, Pleurogenes claviger), nematode (Icosiella neglecta, Oswaldocruzia filiformis ,...

Spauligodon aloisei n. sp. differs other genus by a combination morphological and metrical characters, including spined tail in males females, absence spicule males, arrangement last pair male caudal papillae, vulva location, egg morphology. Predation and/or scavenging on terrestrial birds by sharks is a poorly documented issue especially in the Mediterranean. The present study reports first record of blackmouth catshark and blue shark predation/scavenging (common blackbird, typical warbler European quail) Central This case could imply intentional opportunistic predation, sharks, flying surface water. On other hand, exhausted migrating fall into sea thus become prey.
