New strategies for synthesizing polyyne polyrotaxanes are being developed as an approach to stable carbyne "insulated molecular wires". Here we report active metal template route [3]rotaxanes, using dicobalt carbonyl masked alkyne equivalents. We synthesized two both with the same C28 dumbbell component, one a phenanthroline-based macrocycle and 2,6-pyridyl cycloparaphenylene nanohoop. The thermal stabilities of rotaxanes were compared that naked in decalin at 80 °C, nanohoop rotaxane was...
Abstract Polyynes are chains of sp 1 carbon atoms with alternating single and triple bonds. As they become longer, evolve towards carbyne, the 1D allotrope carbon, increasingly unstable. It has been anticipated that long polyynes could be stabilized by supramolecular encapsulation, threading them through macrocycles to form polyrotaxanes—but, until now, polyyne polyrotaxanes many threaded have synthetically inaccessible. Here we show masked alkynes, in which C≡C bond is temporarily...
Abstract The cyclocarbons constitute a family of molecular carbon allotropes consisting rings two-coordinate atoms. Their high reactivities make them difficult to study, but there has been much progress towards understanding their structures and properties. Here we provide short account theoretical experimental work on these rings, highlight opportunities for future research in this field.
Crystallographic, emission and NMR studies of a series C3-symmetric, nine-coordinate substituted pyridyl triazacyclononane Yb(iii) Eu(iii) complexes reveal the impact local solvation ligand dipolar polarisability on field strength, leading to dramatic variations in pseudocontact shifts spectral profiles, giving new guidance for responsive probe design.
V-Shaped porphyrin dimers, with masked p-phenylene bridges, undergo efficient oxidative coupling to form meso-meso linked cyclic oligomers. Reductive aromatization unmasks the p-phenylenes, increasing strain. Oxidation then fuses providing a nanoring curved walls. The strain in this macrocycle bends and fused dimer units (radii of curvature 11.4 19.0 Å, respectively), but it does not significantly alter electronic structure porphyrins.
