This study deals with arsenic distribution in groundwater, soil and edible vegetables the densely populated area of Versilia Plain (Tuscany region, Italy), addressing potential impacts on people’s health. The data revealed high As concentrations some domestic irrigation wells, exceeding 1200 µg/L. average concentration topsoil subsoil was 39 46 mg/kg, respectively, highest reaching about 200 mg/kg. Arsenic concentrates plant roots compared parts; tomato fruits, black cabbage leaves leek...

The “large sample method” of archeomagnetic dating was applied to Stromboli. 127 samples (10 sites) yielded paleofield directions with 95% confidence intervals less than 2°. Coupled a reference curve for secular variation in western Europe, these allow accurate volcanic events. A lava flow underlying San Bartolo village gave minimum age AD 100 (±100); overflow predating the last sector collapse dated from 1350 (±60), suggesting recent occurrence highly hazardous Lava spatters and hot...

Coliphages and enteroviruses were monitored over 12 months in sewage air adjacent to an activated sludge plant. Both showed temporal variation but the mean count of phages enterovirus-positive samples was not significantly different from that enterovirus-negative samples. Hence coliphages are necessarily a good indicator aerosols.

The mercury cell manufacturing process, which has been extensively used in chlor-alkali plants to produce chlorine and caustic soda by electrolysis, represents a major source of Hg environmental pollution. At Saline di Volterra (Tuscany, Italy), solution mining pumping water into halite deposits was applied brines for mercury-cell plant. Hg-contaminated, exhausted were pumped back at depth the rock salt field order renew available resources. Activities ceased 1994, following leakage...

An abandoned open green space in the urban setting of Municipality Pisa (Tuscany, Italy) has been designed for renewal to foster development recreational activities and improve lives surrounding communities. However, geochemical site characterization revealed Pb, Cu, Zn Hg concentrations soil exceeding thresholds imposed by Italian regulations residential use. Cu contents likely reflect effects vehicle traffic, while contamination represents legacy a past artisanal tannery that used...

The volcanoes Etna and Vesuvius are famous for their historical record, which goes back to Greek Roman times. name “Etna” first appears in one of Pindar's Pythian odes (475 B.C.E), the outburst 79 C.E. was reported detail by Pliny Younger. Other written accounts mention Stromboli Vulcano (located on Aeolian Islands), so it might seem that eruptive history these Italian past few millennia is well known. This not case, however, because many limitations data. There enormous gaps due social...

[1] We are grateful to Speranza et al. [2005] (hereinafter referred as SSM) for the opportunity clarify respective merits of “large sample” and “core-drilling stepwise demagnetization” methods determine paleomagnetic directions. The former was initiated in ‘30s by Thellier made popular fields archeomagnetic research. SSM's criticism can be summarized seven points. [2] first concerns laboratory cleaning procedures, use demagnetization diagrams, rock magnetic investigations. SSM feared that we...

This work, based on cartographic, morphologic, structural, paleo-magnetic, stratigraphic, and petro-chemical data, depict a new scenario of the Monte Somma growth volcanic evolution this portion Somma-Vesuvius complex. The is dominated by migration source along three main tectonic trends (N040-050°, N070°, N320°) that governed formation poly-phased caldera. Stratigraphic evidences, stressed UBSU use age clustering, reveal occurrence important climatic changes...

Vesuvio is likely the most if not one of dangerous volcanoes in world. It an active volcano, quiescent since 1944. The activity Monte Somma and volcanic complex commonly referred to as two central edifices, namely Vesuvio. Nevertheless, opening numerous eruptive fissures related vents have characterized throughout their lives. Spatter cones, spatter ramparts, are disseminated downslope Vesuvio’s main cone on southern slopes volcano. Similarly, cinder welded spatters distributed sequence...

Trace elements were measured in soil and groundwater collected within the Fornaci di Barga urban area (Serchio River Valley, Tuscany, Italy), a territory that integrates natural assets with touristic vocation, impacted by long-lasting metallurgical activity. Epidemiological studies highlighted surrounding industrial plants is characterized persistent excess of diseases, attributed to heavy metal pollution. Soils taken school gardens, public parks, sport grounds roadsides. The results...
