Though every country and context is unique, much of HCI research aims to design for situatedness, there are lessons be learned across borders, contexts. Questions we ask include: What common themes that tie together different contexts? For instance, could a maternal health project in India benefit from Kenya vice versa? How can we, as global HCI4D community, work within countries them well? The short-term goal this event link practice disparate contexts by creating forum conversations where...
As HCI Across Borders aspires to celebrate its fifth year at CHI, and the CHI 2020 venue of Hawaii signifies a coming together four continents, goal symposium is bring our focus themes that unify foster solidarity across borders. Thus we select United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals as object study. Many communities within on constrained ephemeral nature resources, including for (HCI4D), (SHCI), Crisis Informatics (CI) communities, among several others. We contend it time these come...
Increasing the awareness for field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) in Global South faces many challenges. The value integrating HCI into computer science programs is still its infancy across locations. Drawing from 16 years experiences supporting Student Design Competitions (SDCs) Latin America and Africa, this paper we reflect on intrinsic extrinsic CHI SDC conjuction with local regional events to address challenge. Via competitions, students get exposed global perspectives HCI,...
It is common to hear of commercial projects in which usability and UX are elemental basic part the development new high-tech products or for those wishing break into markets. However, Mexican government web sites services this not case. In those, needs end user, their particular characteristics technological skills simply taken consideration.

Learning Braille system is one of the most important tasks for blind and visual impaired people. For years, this has been taught with a Slate Stylus, without taking advantage technology. With SBK, we propose keyboard to learn write read Braille. SBK could then be connected computer or mobile device, helping those users, specially young, overcoming difficulties frustration that using traditional methods wound bring.
In this forum we celebrate research that helps to successfully bring the benefits of computing technologies children, older adults, people with disabilities, and other populations are often ignored in design mass-marketed products. ---Juan Pablo Hourcade, Editor
The fast paced evolution of computing disciplines forces educators to a constant reviewing and actualisation both content syllabus professional studies. However, the studies within area Human Computer Interaction (HCI) had been traditionally left aside, being interface design primordial necessity in job market. This proposal offers vision, along with advantages, which would come incorporation HCI careers like Bachelor Informatics Computing Engineering.
Written from the perspective of a wrongfully incarcerated young man color in California prison, this essay argues that U.S. response to 9/11 parallels ways local police forces have responded inner city gang warfare, by acting out vengeance and anger rather than critically examining causes problem. Moreover, just as “war on gangs” has led more crime, violence, imprisoned men—hence creating precisely context for alienation fuels gangs violence—so war terrorism triggered an international wave...
This paper presents the knowledge and lessons learned from our experience running first usability lab in Mexico, originated academia now moving into servicing industry. It also describes HCI research made university, current projects future direction, a Mexican perspective.
The objective of this paper was to propose a heuristic approach evaluate the basic types interactions-communications in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). proposed helped identify design issues MOOC's user interface that hinder adequate essential for effective Distance Learning. This alternative evolved from previous set guidelines oriented foster MOOCs. Adapted guidance complemented by usability principles and experts' vantage point. A study case conducted as implementation-example proof...
This paper describes the two proposed tracks for this year's Students' Competition: Evaluation and Design tracks. For each track we present its themes design problem along with evaluation criteria adopted by coordinators.
In this paper we describe a user-centered design approach used to develop university system, the so-called ProLec (Programa de Lecturas), system designed automate our students' Reading schedules. This also describes way in which applied UCD methodology, user's feedback was essential. Finally, discuss importance listen users order with usability.
University timetabling, better known in the community as course is a widely studied issue for problem solving and operational research community. For many years, groups universities have been developing possible solutions that, most cases, solve only small portion of problem. In this poster, we propose way to timetabling using power robust algorithm with user interface which represents real-world This combination allows us take into consideration that each university has their own...
The design of tools for software development still have improvements on the user experience side it, that reason it would be beneficial to experiment with a natural interaction paradigm. In order do this, first step is required understand environment and real needs developers as well qualitative research by improving proposal obtained gestural Development Environment.
Persona is a designerly artefact rapidly expanding cross-culturally. However paucity of models to get/communicate cultural aspects vital design; lack empirical projects dealing with persona artefacts as research foci, and the upsurge objects produced via research-by-design encourage this cross-cultural study personas co-designed neither in Global North nor South, but Spanish Mexican rural sites. Results show both tactics having relevance co-creating users tackle micro-cultural each site....
The Mexican Registrar for Users of Mobile Phones, (Registro Nacional de Usuarios Telefonia Movil, or RENAUT) is a federal government programme created in order to built an official inventory with all the mobile phone lines country. As part this project, support web site has been facilitate registration process citizens. However, website got number usability problems which could complicate enormously process. This article presents few proposals using User Centered Design approach overcome this.
