Large-scale studies of human behavior in social media need to be held higher methodological standards
Social media are, on the one hand, a highly beneficial environment for word-of-mouth (WOM) propagation of new ideas and products, this has increasingly made them focus marketing communications. On other companies their brands as well politicians, governmental institutions, celebrities have been facing impact negative online WOM complaint behavior. In reaction to any questionable statement or activity, social users can create huge waves outrage within just few hours. These so-called...
Twitter is a social media giant famous for the exchange of short, 140-character messages called "tweets". In scientific community, microblogging site known openness in sharing its data. It provides glance into millions users and billions tweets through "Streaming API" which sample all matching some parameters preset by API user. The service has been used many researchers, companies, governmental institutions that want to extract knowledge accordance with diverse array questions pertaining...
This paper presents a study of the life cycle news articles posted online. We describe interplay between website visitation patterns and social media reactions to content. show that we can use this hybrid observation method characterize distinct classes articles. also find help predict future early accurately. validate our methods using qualitative analysis as well quantitative on data from large international network, for set generating more than 3,000,000 visits 200,000 reactions. it is...
Geotagged tweets are an exciting and increasingly popular data source, but like all social media data, they potentially have biases in who represented. Motivated by this, we investigate the question, 'are users of geotagged randomly distributed over US population'? We link approximately 144 million within US, representing 2.6m unique users, to high-resolution Census population carry out a statistical test which answer this question strongly negative. utilize spatial models integrate further...
Large language models represent a significant advancement in the field of AI. The underlying technology is key to further innovations and, despite critical views and even bans within communities regions, large are here stay. This position paper presents potential benefits challenges educational applications models, from student teacher perspectives. We briefly discuss current state their applications. then highlight how these can be used create content, improve engagement interaction,...
Social media data is widely analyzed in computational social science. Twitter, one of the largest platforms, used for research, journalism, business, and government to analyze human behavior at scale. Twitter offers via three different Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). One which, Twitter's Sample API, provides a freely available 1% costly 10% sample all Tweets. These are supposedly random samples platform activity. However, we demonstrate that, due nature sampling mechanism, it...
Abstract In machine learning, hyperparameter tuning is the problem of choosing a set optimal hyperparameters for learning algorithm. Several approaches have been widely adopted tuning, which typically time consuming process. We propose an efficient technique to speed up process with Grid Search. applied this on text categorization using kNN algorithm BM25 similarity, where three need be tuned. Our experiments show that our proposed at least order magnitude faster than conventional tuning.
Twitter shares a free 1% sample of its tweets through the "Streaming API". Recently, research has pointed to evidence bias in this source. The methodologies proposed previous work rely on restrictive and expensive Firehose find Streaming API data. We tackle problem finding without costly propose solution that focuses using an open data source API.
Because of its willingness to share data with academia and industry, Twitter has been the primary social media platform for scientific research as well consulting businesses governments in last decade. In recent years, a series publications have studied criticized Twitter's APIs partially adapted existing streams. The newest API Academic Research allows "access real-time historical public additional features functionality that support collecting more precise, complete, unbiased datasets....
At the end of October 2022, Elon Musk concluded his acquisition Twitter. In weeks and months before that, several questions were publicly discussed that not only interest to platform's future buyers, but also high relevance Computational Social Science research community. For example, how many active users does platform have? What percentage accounts on site are bots? And, what dominating topics sub-topical spheres platform? a globally coordinated effort 80 scholars shed light these...
Images have become a key vehicle for communicating climate change, especially in visually oriented social media ecosystem. However, few studies examined the ways which change is communicated on those platforms. This study addresses that gap by examining more than 2 million images appearing alongside tweets containing #climatechange, identifying types of different stakeholders share and amount engagement elicit. It highlights differences image are published frequently (e.g., textual...
A lot of centrality measures have been developed to analyze different aspects importance. Some the most popular (e.g. betweenness centrality, closeness centrality) are based on calculation shortest paths. This characteristic limits applicability these for larger networks. In this article we elaborate idea bounded-distance paths calculations. We claim criteria k-centrality and introduce one algorithm calculating both centralities. also present normalizations measures. show that good...
Previous literature has considered the relevance of Twitter to journalism, for example as a tool reporters collect information and organizations disseminate news public. We consider reciprocal perspective, carrying out survey media-related content within Twitter. Using random sample 1.8 billion tweets over four months in 2014, we look at distribution activity across media relative dominance certain terms share content, behavior media, hashtags used versus whole, proportion that is...
Even when external researchers have access to social media data, they are not privy decisions that went into platform design—including the measurement and testing goes deploying new features, such as recommender systems, seeking shape user behavior towards desirable ends. Finding ways identify effects is thus important both for generalizing findings, well understanding nature of usage. One approach find temporal data covering introduction a feature; observing differences in before after...
Purpose To advance the learning of professional practices in teacher education and medical education, this conceptual paper aims to introduce idea representational scaffolding for digital simulations higher education. Design/methodology/approach This study outlines ideas core two important fields namely, facilitate future professionals’ relevant practices, using approximation practice offers multiple options selecting adjusting representations situations. Adjusting demands task by modifying...
