A comparison study between 10 Mediterranean lagoons has been carried out by means of the 3-D numerical model SHYFEM. The investigated basins are Venice and Marano-Grado in Northern Adriatic Sea, Lesina Varano Southern Taranto basin Ionian Cabras Lagoon Sardinia, Ganzirri Faro Sicily, Mar Menor Spain, Nador Morocco. This focused on hydrodynamics terms exchange rates, transport time scale, mixing. Water depends mainly inlet shape tidal range, but also wind regimes case multi-inlet lagoons....
Marine litter is a significant and growing pollutant in the oceans. In recent years, number of studies initiatives trying to assess tackle global threat marine has grown exponentially. Most these studies, when considering macro-litter, focus on floating or stranded litter, whereas there less information available about seabed. The aim this paper give an overview current state-of-the-art methods address issue seafloor macro-litter pollution. includes following topics: monitoring seafloor;...
Abstract In this study we investigated the hydrodynamics and interaction between riverine marine waters in Po River‐Delta‐Sea (RDS) system (Italy). Through application of an unstructured 3D numerical model to a domain comprising river branches, seven coastal lagoons shelf sea, many hydrodispersive phenomena evolving from different water bodies RDS were described. The was successfully calibrated validated for levels, fluxes at inlets temperature salinity observations. use such comprehensive...
The oceanographic forecast capability in coastal seas is often limited by the capacity of numerical models correctly reproducing complex morphology coastline and exchange processes between shelf open seas. In marginal Adriatic Sea this task uppermost importance due to presence several water bodies rivers. We present here a new operational system, called Tiresias, based on unstructured grid model SHYFEM representing whole together with lagoons Marano-Grado, Venice Po Delta. novelty system...
Abstract Lagoons are considered to be the most valuable systems of Mediterranean coastal area, with crucial ecological, historical, economical, and social relevance. Climate change strongly affects areas can deeply status transitional like lagoons. Herein we investigate hydrological response 10 lagoons climate by means numerical models. Our results suggest that amplify salinity temperature changes expected for open sea. Moreover, simulations indicate there will a general loss intralagoon...
The Mar Menor lagoon has been subjected to high anthropogenic pressures. Among them, in the early 1970s, dredging and enlargement of one inlets make a navigable channel had strong consequences on hydrology, ecology, fisheries lagoon. In recent years, changes agricultural practices have induced an eutrophication process, leading loss water quality. As solution, some management proposals included order increase renewal. However, these did not take into account negative effects previous...
Abstract. Addressing coastal risks related to sea storms requires an integrative approach which combines monitoring stations, forecasting models, early warning systems, and management planning. Such great effort is sometimes possible only through transnational cooperation, becomes thus vital face, effectively promptly, the marine events are responsible for damage impacting environment citizens' life. Here we present a shared interoperable system allow better exchange of elaboration on...
Understanding the water circulation in oceans and coastal seas is among key topics of oceanographic climate research. Hydrodynamic studies form basis for many subjects, whether sediment transport, morphology, quality, ecological changes are being investigated. modelling has become a fundamental tool describing dynamics marine environments, revealing human impact on sea promoting sustainable development resources. By complementing – through data assimilation more diffuse integrated global...
Abstract. A multiscale sampling experiment was carried out in the Gulf of Taranto (eastern Mediterranean) providing first synoptic evidence large-scale circulation structure and associated mesoscale variability. The mapping geostrophic showed presence an anticyclonic gyre occupying central open ocean area Taranto. On periphery upwelling is evident where surface waters are colder saltier than at center gyre. Over a 1-week period, rim current undergoes large changes which interpreted as...
The present paper aims to show and discuss the long term continuous recordings of both meteorological hydrodynamic data collected in a semi enclosed sea. site question is composed by Mar Grande Piccolo basins (Southern Italy), which are mutually connected. In turn, joined Ionian Sea means two openings. Therefore, system shows features typical lagunar environment, also affected coastal heavy industry anthropic pressure, thus being highly vulnerable. A monitoring its hydrodynamics could be...
In the interest of both enabling long-term autonomous monitoring at-risk marine environments and raising awareness capabilities among citizens, a heterogeneous system robots was developed, integrated, deployed on mission in Adriatic Sea. This paper details use-case scenario for team robotic agents purpose cooperative litter detection mapping, while also including interested citizens loop allowing them to serve as operators. Two Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs), Remotely Operated Vehicle...
