We have assessed the amount of cartilage in bronchi 19 patients with various degrees anatomical emphysema, mucous gland hyperplasia, and clinical chronic bronchitis. Diminished was best related to emphysema most marked lower lobes segmental first second order subsegmental bronchi. Available evidence suggests that this loss is an associated finding rather than factor produces expiratory flow limitation encountered emphysema.
