Biological sulfur cycling in polar, low-temperature ecosystems is an understudied phenomenon part due to difficulty of access and the dynamic nature glacial environments. One such environment where known play important role microbial metabolisms located at Borup Fiord Pass (BFP) Canadian High Arctic. Here, transient springs emerge from ice near terminus a glacier, creating large area proglacial aufeis (spring-derived ice) that often covered bright yellow/white sulfur, sulfate, carbonate...

A sulfur-dominated supraglacial spring system found at Borup Fiord Pass (BFP), Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada, is a unique sulfur-on-ice expressed along the toe of glacier. BFP has an intermittent flowing, subsurface-derived, glacial that creates large white-yellow icing (aufeis) extends down-valley. Over field campaigns in 2014, 2016, and 2017, numerous samples were collected analyzed for both microbial community composition aqueous geochemistry. Samples from multiple site types:...

Elliptical sulfate-rich features, stained red by the presence of iron oxides, are set within permafrost and carbonate rock at Borup Fiord Pass in Canadian High Arctic. These which vary diameter from ∼0.5 to 3 m, exhibit co-localization sulfur (S) (Fe) minerals, with S Fe both preserved multiple oxidation states. Through application x-ray diffraction (XRD) Raman microspectroscopy, we find that these features appear encapsulate central cores abundant pyrite while 0 , gypsum, iron-bearing...

One of the primary goals space exploration community is to unambiguously detect past or present life outside Earth. As such, a number so-called detection technologies, instruments, and approaches have been applied as part past, current, future missions. astrobiology truly interdisciplinary field within realm with major contributions from physical biological sciences (among others), recently there has development relevant techniques scientific fields that yet be fully extraterrestrial...

Communication is an essential asset enabling humankind to forge advanced civilization. Using approximately 31,000 languages from the Stone Age our present digital information society, humans have connected and collaborated accomplish remarkable feats. As newly dawned Space progresses, we are attempting communicate with intelligent species beyond world, on distant planets in Earth’s far future. Absent mutually understood signs, symbols, semiotic conventions, this study, “Message a Bottle”,...

Abstract In the first part of this series, we delve into foundational aspects “Message in a Bottle (MIAB)” (henceforth referred to as MIAB). This study builds upon legacy Voyager Golden Records, launched aboard 1 and 2 1977, which aimed communicate with intelligent species beyond our world. These records not only offer snapshot Earth human civilization but also represent desire establish contact advanced alien civilizations. Given absence mutually understood signs, symbols, semiotic...
