Large carnivores have long fascinated human societies and profound influences on ecosystems. However, their conservation represents one of the greatest challenges our time, particularly where attacks humans occur. Where recreational and/or livelihood activities overlap with large carnivore ranges, conflicts can become serious. Two different scenarios are responsible for such overlap: In some regions world, increasing populations lead to extended encroachment into which subject contraction,...

Human–sloth bear (Melursus ursinus) conflict can be an important human safety issue where people and sloth bears co-exist. We characterized aspects of attacks on humans using standardized surveys interviews in Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Mehsana districts North Gujarat, India. interviewed 71 victims from 202 villages the study area during 2008–2009; most occurred late monsoon (Oct) early winter (Nov). Sloth typically attacked by charging, knocking them to ground, then rearing up their hind...

Efficient and effective monitoring methods are required to assess population status gauge efficacy of conservation actions for threatened species. Here we review the spectrum field useful distribution, occupancy, abundance, trend five species Asian terrestrial bears. Methods reviewed include expert opinion, local knowledge, bear sign, visual observations, camera traps, DNA-based (hair scat derived), radio telemetry. We examine application each method in terms realizing specific objectives,...

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are biodegradable polyesters accumulated intracellularly as energy resources by bacterial species. In this study, fermentation process for production of PHA is carried out using sesame oil carbon source. We studied recovery poly(3-hydroxybutyric acid) (PHB) from Staphylococcus epidermidis sodium hypochlorite digestion method. Recovered PHB sample was estimated UV spectrophotometer. S. characterized and these findings, we examined purified differential scanning...

A system for rapidly identifying hair specimens by its medullary configuration and scale structure was carried out. Cross sections as well imprints their drawings prepared from microphotographs, taken especially of those species which are the chief prey base two top carnivore found in Gir Protected Area i.e. Asiatic Lion Panthera leo persica Leopard P. pardus is presented. This facilitates identification carnivores through scat analysis.

A basic IPM module for basmati rice as a part of integrated crop management accounting the pest prevalence and information available from literature has been developed. As is location specific dynamic, therefore needs regular updating fine tuning depending on prevalence. The technology successfully validated implemented during 1998 to 2019 in Pusa Basmati 1, Taraori Basmati, Dehraduni 1121 Haryana, Uttar Pradesh Uttarakhand with little modification tuning. Implementation resulted increase...

At the most basic level, assessment of a species’ status involves knowing where it occurs. Determining presence rare species is difficult, and can be further confounded by more common look-alike species. We investigated one few places in world three bears have been reported to co-occur at fine scale: Balpakram National Park, Meghalaya, India.
