To date, the largest Russian rivers discharging to Arctic Ocean remain a “blank spot” on world map of data distribution microplastics in freshwater systems. This study characterizes abundance and morphology surface water Ob River its large tributary, Tom River, western Siberia. The average number particles for two ranged from 44.2 51.2 items per m3 or 79.4 87.5 μg respectively. Of recovered microplastics, 93.5% were less than 1 mm their dimension, group (45.5% total counts) consisted with...

Microbial sulfate reduction in acid mine drainage is still considered to be confined anoxic conditions, although several reports have shown that sulfate-reducing bacteria occur under microaerophilic or aerobic conditions. We measured rates of up 60 nmol S cm(-3) day(-1) oxidized layers gold tailings Kuzbass (SW Siberia). A novel, acidophilic, copper-tolerant Desulfosporosinus sp. I2 was isolated from the same sample and its genome sequenced. The genomic analysis physiological data indicate...

The dominant microbial components of fluids from wells in pristine and water-injected, high-temperature, Western Siberian oil fields, were analyzed by PCR-DGGE. Particular emphasis was placed on sulphate-reducing organisms, due to their ecological industrial importance. Bacterial phylotypes obtained the non-water-injected Stolbovoye field more diverse than those Samotlor field, which is subject secondary recovery reinjection recycled production water. majority both sites related Firmicutes....

Thermal ecosystems associated with underground coal combustion sites are rare and less studied than geothermal features. Here we analysed microbial communities of near-surface ground layer bituminous substance in an open quarry heated by subsurface fire metagenomic DNA sequencing. Taxonomic classification revealed dominance only a few groups Firmicutes. Near-complete genomes three most abundant species, 'Candidatus Carbobacillus altaicus' AL32, Brockia lithotrophica AL31, Hydrogenibacillus...
