本研究は、特定の相手との私用目的のコミュニケーションに着目し、若者カップルのミーティングと通信との相互作用を明らかにすることを目的とする。東京近辺在住の若者カップル15組に対して、4週間の活動ダイアリーと通信ダイアリーを記録するアンケート調査、および調査期間中の活動場所の地図上への記録とコミュニケーションに対する意識を把握するためのデプスインタビュー調査を行った。その結果、携帯メール利用がコミュニケーションの大半を占め、利用回数の約50%が交際相手とのコミュニケーションであり、一人暮らし、家族と同居、同棲といった居住形態の違いが共に活動する時間や通信回数および活動場所に影響を与えることがわかった。また、一日の満足度と交際相手との活動時間の間には相関関係が認められたが、通信回数との間には相関関係が認められなかった。さらに、通信回数は現状でほぼ満足しているが、ミーティングの回数については現状より増加させたいカップルが半数存在し、交際相手とのコミュニケーションにおいて通信はミーティングの代替機能よりも補完機能が大きいことが確認された。
