Parasitological studies on helminths of amphibians in South America have increased the past few years. Here, we present a list with summarized data published American from 1925 to 2012, including helminth parasites, host species, and geographic records. We found 194 reports parasitizing 185 amphibian species eleven countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Equador, French Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay Venezuela. Helminth biodiversity includes 278 parasite groups Acanthocephala,...
There is an increasing interest in unveiling the dynamics of parasite infection. Understanding interaction patterns, and determinants host-parasite association contributes to filling knowledge gaps both community disease ecology. Despite being targeted as a relevant group for conservation efforts, amphibians their parasites broad scales are poorly understood. Here we describe biodiversity South American amphibians, testing influence host body size geographic range helminth species richness...
Abstract Despite the great interest to quantify structure of host–parasite interaction networks, real influence some factors such as taxonomy, host body size and ecological opportunity remains poorly understood. In this paper, we investigate general patterns organization interactions in two anuran–parasite networks Brazilian Pantanal (seasonally flooded environment) Atlantic Forest (non-flooded forest). We present theoretical models test whether structures these are influenced by neutrality,...
Abstract Speciation via host-switching is a macroevolutionary process that emerges from microevolutionary dynamic where individual parasites switch hosts, establish new association, and reduce reproductive contact with the original parasite lineage. Phylogenetic distance geographic distribution of hosts have been shown to be determinants capacity opportunity change hosts. Although speciation has reported in many host-parasite systems, its on individual, population community levels poorly...
Abstract Acanthocephalans constitute a small taxonomic group related to rotifers and specialized in parasitic lifestyle. Anurans act as paratenic definitive hosts infections always occur trophically. Our objective is describe summarize the richness of acanthocephalans Neotropical anurans. We conducted literature review main research databases, compiling data published until August 2021. identified 66 articles with records acanthocephalan-anuran association, 53.03% were carried out Brazil....
Forty-three specimens of Leptodactylus podicipinus (Anura: Leptodactylidae) were collected in the south-eastern Pantanal, municipality Corumbá, State Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil February and July 2007, examined for endoparasites. Forty (93%) infected with at least one helminth species. The predominant parasites nematodes (Aplectana sp., Cosmocerca podicipinus, Oswaldocruzia lopesi, Physalopteroides venancioi, Rhabdias sp.), but trematode Catadiscus propinquus also showed high prevalence....
We examined the anurans Dendropsophus nanus, Hypsiboas raniceps, Phyllomedusa azurea, Pseudis limellum, paradoxa, Scinax nasicus, Trachycephalus typhonius, Leptodactylus chaquensis, fuscus, podicipinus, and Physalaemus albonotatus from southeastern Pantanal, Brazil, for helminth parasites. These 11 anuran species were associated with 35 taxa: 1 undetermined acanthocephalan, 28 nematodes, 6 digenetic trematodes. Helminth richness varied 2 in hylids D. nanus P. limellum to 18 L. chaquensis....

SUMMARY We describe the diversity and structure of a host–parasite network 11 anuran species their helminth parasites in Pantanal wetland, Brazil. Specifically, we investigate how heterogeneous use space by hosts changes parasite community diversity, local pool exploits sympatric host different habits. examined 229 specimens, interacting with 32 taxa. Mixed effect models indicated influence body size, but not habit, as determinant richness. Variation taxonomic however, was significantly...
Abstract Studies of amphibian macroparasites are relevant for the investigation parasite community ecology and disease dynamics. Here, communities five anuran species ( Hypsiboas raniceps, Phyllomeduza azurea, Pseudis paradoxa, Leptodactylus fuscus podicipinus ) described from two habitats with different levels preservation (pasture versus nature reserve). Specifically, we used mixed-effect models to test whether helminth richness, prevalence abundance differ between host collection sites. A...
Understanding the patterns of species distribution and abundance has been at core ecology. In general, these are determined by dispersion as well abiotic biotic environmental conditions. Similarly, host–parasite relations structure parasite assemblages also shaped conditions landscape composition. Herein, we assessed influence variables on helminth parasites communities in frog Leptodactylus podicipinus. We sampled 10 ponds recorded area, depth, altitude, pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity,...
Southern Amazonia is one of the less-explored regions by anuran taxonomists. We describe a small new species snouted treefrog, genus Scinax , from this region, fluvial archipelago in Juruena River, state Mato Grosso, Brazil. The description based on external morphology adults and tadpoles, advertisement call molecular data. phylogenetically related to other treefrogs cruentomma group shows most southeastern distribution among its close relatives. It distinguished congeners mainly larger...
Abstract Understanding the mechanisms driving host–parasite interactions has important ecological and epidemiological implications. Traditionally, most studies dealing with interaction networks have focused on species relationship patterns, intra-population variation in such been widely overlooked. In this study, we tested whether composition of parasite communities five anuran ( Leptodactylus chaquensis , fuscus podicipinus Pseudis paradoxa Pithecopus azureus) vary across a pasture pond...
Abstract The role that the environment plays in vector‐borne parasite infection is one of central factors for understanding disease dynamics. We assessed how Neotropical bird foraging strata and habitat preferences determine by parasites genera Haemoproteus , Plasmodium Leucocytozoon Trypanosoma filarioids, tested phylogenetic signal these host–parasite associations. performed extensive searches scientific literature created a database hemoparasite surveys. collected data on host body mass,...
Abstract Several factors may influence the structure of parasite communities in amphibian hosts. In this study, we describe helminth parasites three allopatric populations frog Leptodactylus podicipinus and test whether host size sex were determinants composition communities. One hundred twenty-three anurans collected from different study sites within Pantanal wetlands surveyed for parasites. We found 14 taxa: 7 species nematodes, 4 trematodes, 1 cestodes, acanthocephalan one unidentified...
Sympatric hosts are exposed to similar ecological conditions, particularly if they closely related phylogenetically and share some physiological behavioral traits. We studied the sympatric frogs Leptodactylus chaquensis Cei, 1950 podicipinus (Cope, 1862) investigate extent which helminth parasite communities were influenced by host species’ characteristics or habitat location. described compared of 50 L. 40 collected concurrently from two different study sites in Brazil’s Pantanal...
