Abstract Sea-level changes during the Pleistocene and geomorphological history have largely molded intricate shaping of coastal drainages in Eastern South America. Therefore, freshwater fishes from this region are promising models to infer how riverine isolation reconnections affected their genetic diversification geographic distribution. In present study, we provided a detailed cytogenomic analysis Ancistrus multispinis brevipinnis, including physical mapping repetitive DNA classes, verify...

Hypostomus is the most speciose genus in family Loricariidae, with approximately 120 species. These fish show a wide morphological and color variation, which hinders identification of species, mainly widely distributed representatives. The aim this study was to contribute current knowledge on cytogenetic features nigromaculatus. Three specimens H. nigromaculatus, collected two tributaries rio Tibagi, Paraná, Cachoeira de Emas, Mogi-Guaçu, São Paulo, latter being type locality were studied....

Cytogenetic analyses were performed on fishes of the genus Hypostomus (Hypostomus ancistroides (Ihering, 1911), strigaticeps (Regan, 1908), regani 1905), and paulinus 1905)) from seven tributaries Paranapanema River Basin (Brazil) by means different staining techniques (C-, Ag-, CMA3- DAPI-banding) fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to detect 18S rDNA sites. All species showed diploid numbers: 2n=68 (10m+26sm+32st-a) ancistroides, 2n=72 (10m+16sm+46st-a) strigaticeps,...

We investigated the chromosomal distribution of 18S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) in different populations 11 species Hypostomus collected important Brazilian basins, namely South Atlantic, Upper Paraná, and Paraguay applying fluorescence situ hybridization (FISH). cochliodon, commersoni, hermanni, regani, albopunctatus, paulinus, aff. iheringii, mutucae presented multiple rDNA sites while strigaticeps nigromaculatus exhibited a single pair chromosomes with sites. The studied variations number...

In the present study, specimens of Bryconamericus ecai collected from Forquetinha River/RS, were cytogenetically analyzed, disclosing a wide karyotypic diversity in this species. All individuals had 2n = 50, with different formulae, resulting four cytotypes and one B macrochromosome observed cytotype III. Heterochromatin was distributed pericentromeric region most chromosomes on also chromosome pair interstitial markings IV. Staining CMA3 DAPI fluorochromes revealed C-band rich AT base pairs...

Six populations of <i>Hoplias malabaricus</i> from the Lower Paranapanema River were studied and showed 2n = 40 with metacentric/submetacentric chromosomes for females 39 m/sm males, thereby revealing a multiple sex chromosome system X1X1X2X2/X1X2Y type. The Y was largest metacentric in all karyotypes. heterochromatic blocks located...

The genus Astyanax is prominent among Characiformes, due to the large number of species found and its wide geographic distribution. In this work, laticeps specimens from laguna dos Patos system were cytogenetically analyzed. A diploid 2n = 50 chromosomes distributed into 6m+16sm+16st+12a (FN 88) was found, without differences between males females. few small heterochromatin blocks observed, besides three more conspicuous C-bands, corresponding NORs, as confirmed by silver nitrate CMA3...

Specimens of Arapaima gigas from Jamari River (RO) were cytogenetically analyzed. A diploid number 2n=56 chromosomes was found (28m-sm + 28st-a). Secondary constrictions observed on the short arms chromosome 3. Nucleolar Organizer Regions (NORs) detected at subterminal region third chromosomal pair by both silver nitrate staining and FISH with 45S rDNA probe, being equivalent to secondary constrictions. The ribosomal sites also characterized size heteromorphism presence CMA 3 /DAPI - blocks....

Karyotypic studies were carried out on three species of the genus Oligosarcus: O. paranensis, pintoi, and longisrostris. All them showed a diploid number 50 chromosomes same karyotypic formulae (4M + 10SM 16ST 20A). Silver nitrate staining revealed single NORs in longirostris multiple paranensis pintoi. Heterochromatin seemed to play an important role chromosomal diversification these species. Based cytogenetical data, speciation hypotheses within this group proposed, reinforcing importance...

Cytogenetic analyses were performed on Hoplias malabaricus (Bloch, 1794) from the Taquari River, Parana River drainage, revealing two sympatric karyomorphs. One karyomorph was characterized by 2n = 40 m/sm and 39 chromosomes for females males, respectively, an X1X1X2X2/X1X2Y sex chromosome system. In second karyomorph, specimens showed 42 chromosomes, without sex-related heteromorphism. Both karyomorphs a distribution of heterochromatin in pericentromeric telomeric regions. addition to...

Freshwater catfishes from the genus Hypostomus have been models for several cytogenetic studies, due to their intense variability in diploid number, chromosome morphology, and distribution of repetitive DNAs.
