The human somatosensory network relies on ionic currents to sense, transmit, and process tactile information. We investigate hydrogels that similarly transduce pressure into currents, forming a piezoionic skin. As in rapid- slow-adapting mechanoreceptors, can vary widely duration, from milliseconds hundreds of seconds. These are shown elicit direct neuromodulation muscle excitation, suggesting path toward bionic sensory interfaces. signal magnitude duration depend cationic anionic mobility...
Electronic conducting polymers (ECP) have been widely studied in a tri-layer configuration as soft, bending actuators. These electroactive materials also reported to behave mechanical strain sensors able convert stimulation into electrical signals. This sensing behavior is attributed the so-called piezoionic effect and observed most ionic (EAPs). However, ambiguities remain on origin of this effect, being either stress gradient induced ion motion or Donnan potentials arising at...
Abstract Women's intentions regarding genetic testing for breast cancer susceptibility were the focus of present research. We explored motives behind to be tested cancer; relationships between risk status and perceptions tested; individual differences in coping styles associated with tested. Results on 150 women (54 at 96 average risk) showed that: most would consider being different factors count reasons against testing; motivations differ two groups; "unrealistic optimism" was observed...
We demonstrate the application of implanted-ion $\beta$-detected NMR as a probe ionic liquid molecular dynamics through measurement $^8$Li spin-lattice relaxation (SLR) and resonance in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate. The motional narrowing resonance, local maxima SLR rate, $1/T_1$, imply sensitivity to sub-nanosecond Li$^+$ solvation dynamics. From an analysis we extract activation energy ${E_A = 74.8 \pm 1.5}$ meV Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann constant ${T_{\mathrm{VFT}} 165.8 0.9}$ K,...
