A consortium of several Australian and European institutes – together with the Southern Observatory (ESO) has initiated design MAVIS, a Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) system for ground- based 8-m Very Large Telescope (VLT). MAVIS (MCAO-assisted Visible Imager Spectrograph) will deliver visible images integral field spectrograph data 2-3x better angular resolution than Hubble Space Telescope, making it powerful complement at wavelengths to future facilities like space-based James Webb...
SHARK-NIR channel is one of the two coronagraphic instruments proposed for Large Binocular Telescope, in framework call second generation instruments, issued 2014. Together with SHARK-VIS channel, it will offer a few observing modes (direct imaging, imaging and low resolution spectroscopy) covering wide wavelength domain, going from 0.5μm to 1.7μm. Initially as an instrument also K-band, current design foresees camera working Y H bands, exploiting this way synergy other LBT such LBTI,...
Context . Full sky coverage adaptive optics (AO) on extremely large telescopes requires the adoption of several laser guide stars as references. With such apertures, apparent elongation beacons is absolutely significant. a few exceptions, wavefront sensors (WFSs) designed for natural can be adapted and used in suboptimal mode this context. Aims We analyse describe geometrical properties class WFSs that are specifically to deal with propagated from location immediate vicinity telescope...
We revisit one class of z-invariant WaveFront sensor where the LGS is fired aside telescope aperture. In this way there a spatial dependence on focal plane with respect to height resonant scattering occurs. We revise basic parameters involving geometry and we propose various merit functions define how much improvement can be attained by approach. We show that refractive approaches are not viable discuss several solutions reflective ones in what has been nicknamed "ingot wavefront sensor"...
In this article we report the results of a comprehensive simulation program aimed at investigating coronagraphic capabilities SHARK-NIR, camera selected to proceed final design phase Large Binocular Telescope. For purpose, developed dedicated tool based on physical optics propagation. The code propagates wavefronts through SHARK optical train in an end-to-end fashion and can implement any kind coronagraph. Detection limits be finally computed, exploring wide range Strehl values observing conditions.
SHARK-NIR is an instrument which provides direct imaging, coronagraphic dual band imaging and low resolution spectroscopy in Y, J H bands, taking advantage of the outstanding performance Large Binocular Telescope AO systems. observations will be provided used combination with SHARK-VIS (operating V band) LMIRCam LBTI from K to M bands), a way exploit simultaneous three different wavelengths. A wide variety techniques have been implemented SHARK-NIR, ranging conventional ones such as Gaussian...
Laser Guide Stars are, in spite of their name, all but "stars". They do not stand at infinite distance, neither on a plane. If fired from the side large telescope characteristics as seen various points apertures changes dramatically. As they extend 3D world, there is need WFS that deploy similar manner, conjugated volume, resembling approach MCAO required long time ago to overcome usual limitations conventional AO. We describe class novel kind employ combination refraction and reflection,...
A robust post processing technique is mandatory for analysing the coronagraphic high contrast imaging data. Angular Differential Imaging (ADI) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) are most used approaches to suppress quasi-static structure presents in Point Spread Function (PSF) revealing planets at different separations from host star. In this work, we present comparison between ADI PCA applied System of coronagraphy with High order Adaptive optics R K band (SHARK-NIR), which will be...
In this paper, we present an overview of the System Design Analysis carried on for SHARK-NIR, coronagraphic camera designed to take advantage outstanding performance that can be obtained with FLAO facility at LBT, in near infrared regime. Born as a fast-track project, system now foresees both direct imaging and spectroscopic observing mode, together first order wavefront correction tool. The analysis here report includes several trade-offs selection baseline design, terms optical mechanical...
Stellar activity influences radial velocity (RV) measurements and can also mimic the presence of orbiting planets. As part search for planets around components wide binaries performed with SARG High Resolution Spectrograph at TNG, it was discovered that HD 200466A shows strong variation in RV is well correlated index based on H$_\alpha$. We used to study H$_\alpha$ line variations each component a few bright stars test capability revealing rotation period or cycle. analysed relations between...
TIPTOP is a python library that able to quickly compute Point Spread Functions (PSF) of any kind Adaptive Optics systems. This has multiple objectives: support the exposure time calculators future VLT and ELT instruments, adaptive optics systems design activities, be part PSF reconstruction pipelines selection best asterism natural guide stars for observation preparation. The Adaptive Optics Module of MAVIS is a self-contained MCAO module, which delivers corrected FoV to the postfocal scientific instruments, in visible. module aims exploit full potential ESO VLT UT4 Facility, composed high spatial frequency deformable secondary mirror and laser guide stars launching control systems. During Phase A, we evaluated, with support simulations analysis at different levels, main terms error budgets aiming estimating realistic AOM performance. After introducing...
Phase diversity is a focal plane wavefront sensing technique that allows to retrieve the phase aberration introduced by camera starting from two images of whatever object, one which (the diverse image) intentionally corrupted known aberration. We present here results simulation campaign aimed at assessing validity this approach for non-common path aberrations (NCPA) in SHARK-NIR, new-generation high-contrast imager Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). The be retrieved has been modeled on...

Dark wavefront sensing takes shape following quantum mechanics concepts in which one is able to "see" an object path of a two-arm interferometer using as low desired amount light actually "hitting" the occulting object. A theoretical way achieve such goal, but realm sensing, represented by combination two unequal beams sharing same incoming light, and whose difference length continuously adjusted order show different signals for signs perturbation.
