Depth distribution data were compared for 172 European and 157 Antarctic benthic invertebrate species occurring in the respective shelf areas. showed significantly wider depth ranges selected families of groups Bivalvia, Gastropoda, Amphipoda Decapoda. No differences found Polychaeta, Asteroidea Ophiuroidea, where also comparatively wide bathymetric ranges. These extended levels eurybathy benthos may be interpreted either as an evolutionary adaptation or pre-adaptation to oscillation ice...
Recent records of lithodid crabs in deeper waters off the Antarctic continental slope raised question return to waters, following their extinction lower Miocene ∼15 million years ago. cooling may be responsible for impoverishment marine high decapod fauna, presently comprising only five benthic shrimp species. Effects polar conditions on life, including lowered metabolic rates and short seasonal food availability, are discussed as main evolutionary driving forces shaping diversity. In...
Abstract. To a certain degree, Eastern Boundary Current (EBC) ecosystems are similar: Cold bottom water from moderate depths, rich in nutrients, is transported to the euphotic zone by combination of trade winds, Coriolis force and Ekman transport. The resultant high primary production fuels secondary upper pelagic nearshore zones, but where O2 exchange restricted, it creates oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) at shelf slope (Humboldt Benguela Current) or depths (California Current). These hypoxic...
Based on data from the Weddell Sea in Atlantic sector of Southern Ocean, total number macrozoobenthic species was estimated for entire Antarctic shelf using species-accumulation methods, jack-knife estimators, and Incidence-based Coverage Estimators richness. Ranging between 11 000 17 expected species, Antarctica seems to have an intermediate richness when compared other selected tropical, temperate or Arctic habitats.

Abstract Besides a well oxygenated shallow water area characterized by an extremely rich benthic life, most of the Peruvian and Chilean continental shelf upper slope lies within oxygen minimum zone (omz), poor macrobenthic colonization which is in striking contrast to abundant pelagic life overlying waters. However, eukaryotic benthos this shares seafloor with important prokaryotic component filamentous (‘sphagetti’) bacteria belonging mainly genus Thioploca . Under ‘normal’, non-Niño...
AbstractMany infaunal sandy-bottom communities in shallow waters of the Peruvian upwelling system are inhabited by large coexisting populations surf clams Mesodesma donacium and Donax peruvianus as well anomuran mole crab Emerita analoga. Under normal conditions, equilibrium states possible with any one these species dominating. A community south Lima Peru was investigated over 2,5 years, covering periods prior to, during after El Niño (EN) 1982–83. It revisited several times later. Growth,...
