Pantocsekiella comensis is ubiquitous in the Laurentian Great Lakes and an important indicator of climate change low nutrients. forms a diverse complex with high morphological diversity. We distinguished three species within complex: P. comensis, delicatula, laurentiana sp. nov. by examining specimens from using light scanning electron microscopy. All have radial, uniform, alveolate striae, central fultoportula, rimoportula opposite marginal fultoportulae. However, has smaller diameter than...

The type material of Synedra acus var. ostenfeldii Willi Krieg. was investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. species is one the few fragilarioid taxa that forms stellate colonies. Its morphology compared with Fragilaria tenera lemanensis Druart, Lavigne & M.Robert, another taxon forming star-shaped colonies, on slide in from a neighbouring lake. results show both not being conspecific based valve outline, dimensions presence spines. Based observations, transferred to genus...

Abstract Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms (cHABs) are increasingly common in marine and freshwater environments, including the Laurentian Great Lakes (LGL). Lake Superior has seen two large-scale cyanobacterial blooms (2012 2018) along Wisconsin shoreline west of Apostle Islands, caused by cyanobacterium Dolichospermum lemmermannii. The drivers bloom formation not yet certain, with many factors known to trigger elsewhere LGL being absent Superior. Furthermore, little is about D....
