Retrieval of abundances atmospheric species from limb infrared emission spectra requires accurate knowledge the pointing instrument in terms elevation, as well temperature and pressure profiles. An optimal estimation‐based method is presented to infer these quantities measured spectra. The successful efficient joint retrieval largely correlated depends strongly on proper selection space, spectral microwindows, choice reasonable constraints which force solution be stable. proposed strategy...

Pronounced upper stratospheric and mesospheric NO x enhancements were measured by the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) in Southern Hemisphere (SH) polar vortex from May to August 2003, reaching average abundances of 60 ppbv at 50–60 km July. Peak mixing ratios around 200 night, representing highest values ever recorded SH. The observed are attributed production electron precipitation mesosphere lower thermosphere subsequent descent with meridional...

This paper presents a novel bioinspired algorithm to tackle complex optimization problems: the coral reefs (CRO) algorithm. The CRO artificially simulates reef, where different corals (namely, solutions problem considered) grow and reproduce in colonies, fighting by choking out other for space reef. fight space, along with specific characteristics of corals' reproduction, produces robust metaheuristic shown be powerful solving hard problems. The large solar storms in October–November 2003 produced enormous proton events (SPEs) where high energetic particles reached the Earth and penetrated into middle atmosphere polar regions. At this time, Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) was observing 6–68 km altitude range. MIPAS observations of NO x (NO + 2 ) O 3 period from 25 October to 14 November are first global measurements species, covering both summer (daylight) winter (dark) regions during an SPE....

The large solar storm in October–November 2003 produced enormous amounts of high‐energy protons which reached the Earth and penetrated into middle atmosphere polar regions. At this time, Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) on board Environmental Satellite (ENVISAT) was observing 6–68 km altitude range. MIPAS observed significant enhancements NO y components HNO 3 , N 2 O 5 ClONO northern stratosphere after intense proton events. Two distinct were observed. An...

Vertical profiles of stratospheric HNO 3 were retrieved from limb emission spectra recorded by the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) aboard Envisat research satellite during Antarctic winter 2003. A high second maximum was found around 34 km altitude with abundances up to 14 ppbv July. Similar have not been reported in literature previous winters, but subsequent Arctic 2003/2004, after severe perturbations due solar proton events. The stratosphere started...

Time series of stratospheric ClO and HOCl have been measured with the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) on board Environmental Satellite (ENVISAT) during solar storm episode in October/November 2003. A remarkable enhancement mean values (averaged over latitudes poleward from 70°N) was found, reaching more than 0.2 ppbv even 0.4 when only nighttime measurements are considered. found to increase by up 0.3 at altitudes above 32 km. This gives indirect proof...
