Objective.
—To assess the outcomes of health behavior interventions, focusing on elementary school environment, classroom curricula, and home programs, for primary prevention cardiovascular disease.
Design.
—A randomized, controlled field trial at four sites with 56 intervention 40 control schools. Outcomes were assessed using prerandomization measures (fall 1991) follow-up (spring 1994).
Participants.
total 5106 initially third-grade students from ethnically...
To study the relationship between peer-related physical activity (PA) social networks and PA of adolescent girls.Cross-sectional, convenience sample girls. Mixed-model linear regression analyses to identify significant correlates self-reported while accounting for correlation girls in same school.Younger were more active than older Most activity-related peer network items related levels. More with friends was significantly multivariate analyses.Frequency an important correlate among variables
Formative research uses qualitative and quantitative methods to provide information for researchers plan intervention programs. Gaps in the formative literature include how define goals, implementation plans, questions; select methods; analyze data; develop interventions. The National Heart, Lung, Blood Institute funded Trial of Activity Adolescent Girls (TAAG), a randomized, multicenter field trial, reduce decline physical activity adolescent girls. goals TAAG are (a) describe study...
We evaluated the effect of providing a safe play space on physical activity level inner-city schoolchildren. In 1 2 matched neighborhoods, we opened schoolyard and provided attendants to ensure children's safety. Over next years directly observed number children their levels in school-yard, as well surrounding intervention comparison neighborhoods. also surveyed schools neighborhoods regarding sedentary activities. After was opened, mean 71.4 used it weekdays 25.8 weekends during school year....
ABSTRACT: Health promotion interventions intended to improve dietary behavior frequently incorporate self‐efficacy as a construct enhance change. This paper presents results from study establish psychometric properties of scale measure children's for selecting healthful food. As part series pilot studies develop instrumentation the Child and Adolescent Trial Cardiovascular (CATCH), data were collected on third fourth grade students (n = 1,127). Data analyses conducted estimate internal...
ABSTRACT: This paper describes an intervention to increase high school students' fruit and vegetable consumption. Twelve schools were randomized or control conditions. The cohort (2,213 students; 56% females, 84% Caucasian) followed from 9th 12th grades. Interventions comprised a media campaign, classroom workshops, meal modification, parental support. Usual daily servings of fruit/vegetables increased 14% in the compared group (p>0.001) first three years. At follow‐up, consumption within...
Process evaluation complements outcome by providing data to describe how a program was implemented, well the activities delivered fit original design, whom services were delivered, extent which target population reached, and factors external that may compete with effects. The process system used in Child Adolescent Trial for Cardiovascular Health (CATCH) is presented this paper. conceptual model underlying CATCH described, measures collection protocols are reviewed. Functions of trial...
Incorporating cycling into daily life is one way to increase physical activity.
The Child and Adolescent Trial for Cardiovascular Health (CATCH) was the largest school-based field trial ever sponsored by National Institutes of Health. demonstrated positive changes in school food service physical education program, as well students' cardiovascular health behaviors. Because CATCH intervention programs were implemented 56 schools (in four states) that typical throughout United States, their reception degree implementation provide evidence about feasibility nationally....
Higher fruit and vegetable consumption is associated with a reduced risk of certain cancers chronic diseases. The 5-a-Day for Better Health community studies are evaluating population-based strategies to achieving dietary behavior change using the stages-of-change model theories. authors present baseline comparisons stages among adults young in eight study sites representing diverse regions United States populations settings. Three dominant stages, precontemplation, preparation, maintenance,...
ABSTRACT Background: This study examined physical activity opportunities and barriers at 36 geographically diverse middle schools participating in the Trial of Activity for Adolescent Girls. Methods: Principals, education health department heads, program leaders were interviewed to assess policies instructional practices that support activity. Results: Schools provided approximately 110 hours per year instruction. Approximately 20% students walked or bicycled school. Eighty‐three percent...
Parks can be an important, low-cost neighborhood resource to increase physical activity and reduce overweight obesity. The quality of parks, however, may impact use. This study used observational data examine the relationships between park quality, usage levels among users in 31 parks within low-income, African American neighborhoods. Relationships use characteristics (signs disorder, attractiveness, number settings) varied by gender user level. No variables interest were significant for...
Purpose. The Child and Adolescent Trial for Cardiovascular Health is a multi-site study of school-based intervention designed to reduce or prevent the development risk factors cardiovascular disease. goal was change (or prevent) related behaviors psychosocial variables that theoretically influence those behaviors. Design. A nested design used in which schools served as primary unit analysis. Twenty-four participated at each four sites (Austin, San Diego, Minneapolis, New Orleans). Each site...
Process evaluation is a component of intervention research that evaluates whether interventions are delivered and received as intended. Here, we describe the process results for Trial Activity Adolescent Girls (TAAG) intervention. The consisted four synergistic components designed to provide supportive school- community-linked environments prevent decline in physical activity adolescent girls. indicate were from staff teachers with high fidelity (84–97%) protocol lower (range: 18–93%)...
Parking is a key element of the street and highway system. supply affects driving demand by changing underlying cost structure associated with mode choice decisions. It also levels auto ownership ownership. These two facts combine to make parking management an important powerful tool for both traffic air-quality management. A pilot analysis demographics, transit access, off-street in New York City neighborhoods strongly suggests that provision residential commuting behavior. Moreover, type...

The purpose of this article is to illustrate the use process evaluation for understanding study outcomes. Data from Child and Adolescent Trial Cardiovascular Health (CATCH), a large school-based field trial, are used. Teacher characteristics, measures classroom curriculum implementation, competing influences linked changes in dietary knowledge, intentions, self-efficacy students intervention schools. Multiple regression analyses indicate that teacher charactenstics did not predict program...
