Elevated amounts of antibodies specific for acetylcholine receptors were detected in 87 percent sera from 71 patients with myasthenia gravis but not 175 individuals without gravis, including those other neurologic or autoimmune disease. Antireceptor directed at the binding site receptor. Presence titer antibody did appear to correlate age, sex, steroid therapy, duration symptoms. Myasthenia only ocular symptoms had lower titers, while majority titers thymoma exceeded median group as a whole....

We enrolled and treated 122 patients with idiopathic cervical dystonia in a double-blind, placebo-controlled safety efficacy study of botulinum toxin type B (BotB). Both A-responsive A-resistant were enrolled. Patients received intramuscular injections either BotB (2,500 U, 5,000 or 10,000 U) placebo. The primary outcome measure was the Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale (TWSTRS)-Total score at 4 weeks following drug administration. Secondary measures TWSTRS-Severity,...
Abstract Botulinum toxin type A (Dysport) has been shown in European studies to be a safe and effective treatment for cervical dystonia. This multicenter, double‐blind, randomized, controlled trial assessed the safety efficacy of Dysport dystonia patients United States. Eighty were randomly assigned receive one with (500 units) or placebo. Participants followed up 4 20 weeks, until they needed further treatment. They at baseline weeks 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, after was significantly more efficacious...
Thirteen patients with moderately severe myasthenia gravis participated in a double-blind study using either 100 mg of prednisone or an equivalen numbder placebo tablets on alternate days. Anticholinesterase therapy was continued demand basis. At the end 6 months code broken. Seven were and three these had improved to such degree that steroid not indicated. Four ultimately started improved. Of six prednisone, showed no improvement 2 years, seven still taking maintenance dosage this drug....
The clinical course of juvenile patients with myasthenia gravis seen at the Mayo Clinic through 1965 was reviewed. current status 102 105 determined, an average follow-up 16.1 years. Of those treated wtih thymectomy, 37.5% were in remission and 18.8% died. who did not have 24.1% 20.4% outcome similar a subseries children onset prior to puberty. These results suggest, but fail prove, effectiveness thymectomy inducing or decreasing mortality rate. Multiple potential biases this study are...
Abstract Immunoresistance (Ab+) to botulinum toxin type A (BTX‐A) has been a serous concern since the introduction of BTX‐A in treatment dystonia and other disorders associated with abnormal muscle contractions. We studied seven patients who developed Ab+ later reverted antibodynegative (Ab‐) status. These patients, six women (mean age, 56 years; range, 41–80 years), an average duration for all 197 months (range, 84–360 months), received total mean cumulative dose 1659 units (U)...
Abstract The natural history of cervical dystonia (spasmodic torticollis) was investigated in a population‐based study Rochester, Minnesota. Eleven new cases were identified with onset during the 20‐year period 1960–1979. overall incidence rate 1.2 per 100,000 person‐years (95% confidence interval 0.5–1.9) female: male ratio age‐adjusted rates 3.6:1. A unitary etiology not apparent: injury antedated four 11 patients, whereas six had documented thyroid disease and diabetes. family movement...
SUMMARYThe effects of emetine on rat soleus (a red muscle) and the medial head gastrocnemius relatively white were investigated. The drug was administered at a dosage 1.25 mg. per kilogram daily for five, ten, or fifteen days. Throughout treatment, more severely affected than gastrocnemius. Loss cross striations from small areas noted by fifth day. By fifteenth day, 20 to 90% (average, 48%) fibers in given plane showed multiple lesions, some as wide up 250, μ long, but less 10% displayed...
We theorise that in some cases Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) predisposes to narcolepsy and hypersomnia, there may be a shared pathophysiology with various addictions [Reward Deficiency Syndrome (RDS)]. Reticence acknowledge such connections due narrow nosological framework. Additionally, we the development of on baseline ADHD/RDS leads an additional assault dopaminergic reward system individuals. In this study, propose test these hypotheses by using combination broad...
An unanticipated discovery was made while examining genetics of the immune response in patients treated with botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT), which included cervical dystonia (CD) patients. Initial examination HLA DQA1:DQB1 frequencies revealed an unexpectedly high number DQA1*0102:DQB1*0604 homozygotes (hz) CD We typed BoNT-treated Caucasian subset for HLA-DRB1, DQA1, and DQB1 succeeded typing -DQA1, -DQB1 75 Two statistical methods found locus associated one method a probable association...
