We report light-scattering measurements of powder diffraction patterns crystals essentially hard colloidal spheres. These are consistent with structures formed by stacking close-packed planes particles in a sequence permitted lateral positions, A,B,C, which shows high degree randomness. Crystals grown slowly, while still containing many faults, show tendency towards face-centered-cubic packing: possible explanations for this observation discussed.
We study gelation in suspensions of model colloidal particles with short-ranged attractive and long-ranged repulsive interactions by means three-dimensional fluorescence confocal microscopy. At low packing fractions, form stable equilibrium clusters. Upon increasing the fraction clusters grow size become increasingly anisotropic until finally associating into a fully connected network at gelation. find surprising order gel structure. Analysis spatial orientational correlations reveals that...
Binary mixtures of suspended hard-sphere colloidal particles, radius ratio ${\mathit{R}}_{\mathit{B}}$/${\mathit{R}}_{\mathit{A}}$=0.58, were observed to undergo entropically driven freezing transitions into both the ${\mathit{AB}}_{2}$ and ${\mathit{AB}}_{13}$ superlattice structures at different relative proportions two species. The identified by powder light crystallography electron microscopy dried solid phases. An approximate (constant volume) phase diagram containing three eutectics...

We have studied the freezing of a binary mixture colloidal poly(methyl methacrylate) spheres size ratio 0.31 and composition AB4 (here A refers to larger spheres). When suspended in suitable liquid these particles interact via steeply repulsive (approximately hard sphere) potential. We report the equilibrium self-assembly of binary crystals oppositely charged colloidal microspheres at high density. By varying magnitude charge on near equal-sized spheres we show that structure crystal may be switched between face-centered cubic, cesium chloride, and sodium chloride. interpret these transformations in terms a competition entropic Coulombic forces.
The freezing phase transition in a binary suspension of colloidal hard spheres diameter ratio α=0.61 was studied by light scattering and scanning electron microscopy. suspensions consisted sterically stabilized poly(methyl methacrylate) diameters about 670 407 nm suspended near refractive indexed matched medium composed carbon disulphide cis-decalin.
