Light quality critically affects plant development and growth. Development of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) enables the use narrow band red and/or blue wavelengths as supplementary lighting in ornamental production. Yet, long periods under these will affect leaf morphology physiology. Leaf anatomy, stomatal traits, conductance, hydraulic conductance (Kleaf), photosynthetic efficiency were investigated three pot plants, namely Cordyline australis (monocot), Ficus benjamina (dicot, evergreen...
The impact of salinity on the physiological and biochemical parameters tolerant (‘Bonica’) susceptible (‘Black Beauty’) eggplant varieties (Solanum melongena L.) was determined. results revealed that increase in contributes to a significant decline net photosynthesis (An) both varieties; however, at highest salt concentration (160 mM NaCl), decrease photorespiration (Rl) less pronounced cultivar ‘Bonica’. Stomatal conductance (gs) significantly reduced ‘Black Beauty’ following exposure 40...
Plant factories using artificial light to produce vegetables have high energy costs due the demand for electricity lighting. Compared conventional sources, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) offer possibility of tailoring spectrum and regulating intensity are more energy-efficient in terms conversion regardless levels lighting intensity. Optimal daily integral (DLI) requirements key factors plant growth; however, their values vary among species varieties. Our experiment aimed identify best lettuce...
Abstract The choice of soilless growing medium for plant nutrition, growth and support is crucial improving the eco-sustainability production in horticultural systems. As our current understanding functional microbial communities inhabiting this ecosystem still limited, we examined community development two most important media (organic mineral) used open We aimed to identify factors that influence composition over time compare distribution individual taxa across their potential...
Summary Vegetables and fruits are an important part of a healthy food diet, however, the eco‐sustainability production these can still be significantly improved. European farmers consumers spend estimated €15.5 billion per year on inorganic fertilizers N‐fertilizers results in high carbon footprint. We investigated if fertilizer type medium constituents determine microbial nitrogen conversions organic growing media used as next step towards more sustainable horticulture. demonstrated that...
Rocket cultivation is increasing to supply the expanding ready-to-eat market because of its unique taste, but crops are often over fertilized avoid nitrogen deficiencies. This leads nitrate accumulation in leaves, and products their degradation (nitrites nitrosamines) have been related several health problems. Nitrate concentrations rocket other leafy vegetables subject limits by EU legislation, yet holds a great nutritional value. Degradation glucosinolates (isothiocyanates) consistently...
Plant root exudation is an inherent metabolic process that enhances various functions of the system like mobilization nutrients and interactions with surrounding microbial communities. In soilless crop production, roots are temporally submerged in a nutrient solution affecting process. this study, we asked whether cultures affected by culturing method substrate composition, important factors determining ecosystem. Exploration different growth conditions revealed effect light quality depended...
The effect of water deficit on chlorophyll fluorescence, sugar content, and growth parameters strawberry (Fragaria×ananassa Duch. cv. Elsanta) was studied. Drought stress caused significant reductions in leaf potential, fresh dry masses, area, number. A gradual reduction photochemical quenching (qP) quantum efficiency (ΦPS2) observed under drought while non-photochemical (qN) increased. Maximum photosystem 2 (Fv/Fm) not affected by stress.
The objective of this study was to investigate the relative salt tolerance four eggplant cultivars (Solanum melongena L.) by studying chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters during vegetative growth stage under increasing salinity levels. plants were grown in pots filled with peat controlled conditions and subjected stress ranging from 0 (control), 20, 40, 80, 160 mM NaCl for 25 days. results showed that concentration affected hardly maximum quantum yield photosystem (PS) II. PSII (ΦPSII)...
Abstract Synthetic fertilizer production is associated with a high environmental footprint, as compounds typically dissolve rapidly leaching emissions to the atmosphere or surface waters. We tested two recovered nutrients slower release patterns, promising alternatives for synthetic fertilizers: struvite and commercially available organic fertilizer. Using these fertilizers nitrogen source, we conducted rhizotron experiment test their effect on plant performance nutrient recovery in juvenile...

Abstract BACKGROUND: Increasingly, Flemish greenhouse growers are using spray booms instead of guns to apply plant protection products. Although the advantages well known, still have many questions concerning nozzle choice and settings. Spray deposition a vertical boom in tomatoes strawberries was compared with reference equipment. Five different settings type, size pressure were tested boom. RESULTS: In general, standard performed better than equipment (spray gun) (air‐assisted sprayer)....
