In an interesting experimental study, Bonini et al. (1999) present partial support for truth-gap theories of vagueness. We say this despite their claim to find theoretical and empirical reasons dismiss gap the fact that they favor alternative, epistemic account, which call 'vagueness as ignorance'. yet more evidence supports theories, argue a semantic/pragmatic alternative unifies gappy supervaluationary approach together with its glutty relative, subvaluationary approach.
In some languages, (certain) root modals license Actuality Entailments (AEs) when they are perfective-marked. We discuss two puzzling properties of these constructions: (i) AE-licensing negated, the result entails negation actuality, and (ii) embed disjunctions, no Free Choice inferences available. develop an account show that, given implicature-based view Choice, follows as a consequence.
Actuality Entailments (AEs) are inferences from premises that appear to be modal, like (1a), but their content is the modality effectuated in evaluation world – (1b). ... Whatever special feature is, its effect complex, and it interacts nontrivial ways with other phenomena of theoretical interest. In this paper I expand on these points by focusing three generalizations. They ae-modality, anti-ae, no-fc:
The main puzzle that Japanese -made gives rise to is it has two uses, the until-use and by-use. In this paper we attempted analyze uses uniformly. core idea in both introduces domain alternatives, a phonologically null alternative-sensitive operator additional inferences based on them. We employed such operators, exc exh. former accounts for until-use, as Alxatib's 2023 account of English until. latter plays crucial role our infelicity combination by-use durative predicate well obviation effects.
Non-negative contexts are often used as a diagnostic for negative concord items, the claim being specifically that these not suitable hosts items. We present an in-depth empirical investigation of how single polarity sensitive item behaves under negation compared to in non-negative contexts. To our knowledge, this is first detailed its kind. The we focus on Turkish kimse 'anyone', and beyond fact can appear contexts, it otherwise item. evidence collected shows, balance, has highly parallel...
We discuss the problem of deriving upper-bounded meanings few, fewer than, and related expressions, in treatments where they are taken to denote predicates individuals. In such analyses, determiner-like uses these expressions derived by existentiallyclosing their predicate denotations, but this is known give rise problems (van Benthem, 1986). show that needed upper bound can be applying an exhaustification operator above existential closure. Crucially, insensitive distributive properties...
We discuss lessons from VP-ellipsis about tense embedding (TE). begin by portraying two possible views of relative clause TE (RC-TE): one that derives simultaneous readings only coreference, and another them binding (section 2). show data VP-ellipsis, inspired Stowell 2014, support the view 3), later review an argument has been made against it 4). The is based on behavior so-called defective modals in was articulated Abusch (1994) von Stechow (1995). In our evaluation Abusch’s/von Stechow’s...
This paper concerns similarities and differences between the implicatures of dis-junction — modalized disjunction specifically other scalar terms like some. The two inference types are compared with special attention to their behavior under association only, where they shown come apart. I argue that disjunct alternatives (p,q) a disjunctive associate only ([p or q]) do not feed semantics particle. significance claim is discussed in connection (a) semantic implicature-based accounts free choice...
