A detailed analysis of the interactions between Tursiops truncatus (Montagu, 1821) and artisanal fishing mullets (Mugil spp.) is presented at two localities in south Brazil: Laguna (Santa Catarina) Inibé/Tramandaí (Rio Grande do Sul). Its behavioral strategies advantages their association are re-described quantified based on success capture selectivity prey sizes. The main resource involved (92% to 75%) both numerical level as biomass. Twenty individuals participated 9 Imbé/Tramandaí....
Residence patterns, habitat use, range, and some population estimate of the coastal bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus (Montagu, 1821), were documented in two sites southern Brazil: Laguna (Santa Catarina) (28º30'S; 48º55'W), Imbe/Tramandai (Rio Grande do Sul) (29º58'S; 50º07'W). Regular observations carried out at system for 27 months (August 1989 to December 1991). The dolphins photo-identified using natural permanent marks. Over 4,500 photograps taken from shore grounds 6 14 meters...
ABSTRACT The common dolphins (genus Delphinus ) have one of most problematic taxonomies and complex distribution patterns all cetaceans. Although the taxonomy seem to been clarified somewhat in eastern North Pacific Indo‐Pacific Oceans, many questions remain Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SWA). We review biogeography SWA. reviewed data from strandings, incidental catches sightings since 1922. Systematic surveys were conducted five major areas. Twenty‐one natural history collections examined,...
Few studies have focused the vertical structure of bat assemblages, and how it influences community composition. The goal this study was to analyze an assemblage bats in a forest fragment southern Brazil. Bats were sampled using mist-nets placed at three heights (understory, below-canopy, canopy). Forest strata compared with respect their species richness diversity. latter estimated Shannon-Wiener index (H'), statistical significance differences among assessed t tests. We used Constancy (C)...
Abstract The home range and habitat use of three carnivore species was investigated in a disturbed forest southeastern Brazil. Three jaguarundis ( Herpailurus yagouaroundi ), two crab-eating foxes Cerdocyon thous tayras Eira barbara ) were radio-tracked to test the hypothesis that ranges would differ between proportion types available. largest those one male jaguarundi (2047 ha) fox (1053 ha). smallest females (48 (188 female only individual show significant difference observed expected use....
Migration is defined as a seasonal and cyclic population movement observed in all animal classes studied mainly vertebrates. A considerable part of the knowledge on migration comes from birds, for which an important aspect their biology. In case bats, females usually migrate larger distances than males some species. The present study analyzes occurrence Pygoderma bilabiatum (Wagner, 1843) at different elevations, order to test pattern that evidences migration, using data states Espírito...
Glossophagine bats feed mainly on flower products, but often eat also insects and fruits. The composition of their diet may change according to climate seasonality. In the present study we analyzed bat Anoura caudifer at southernmost limit its geographic distribution, Atlantic Forest southern Brazil. We identified food items plant species consumed by A. tested hypothesis that varies seasonally. collected fecal material monthly from October 2003 September 2004 in a day roost caudifer....
Study of 179 specimens Molossus molossus in Ceará, Brazil, showed morphological and functional ovarian asymmetry adult females, with the right side more developed.Blastocyst implantation occurred also uterine homo Active ma/e testicles were bigger (x = 5,38 mm) than inactive ones 3,25 mm).Pregnancy subsequent offspring was found March•April November, during lhe wet season.
Camera traps were used to study the daily activity patterns of medium and large mammals (> 1 kg) in an area Mixed Rain Forest (High Altitude Atlantic Forest) South Brazil. Species that exhibited diurnal tendencies Dasyprocta azarae, Eira barbara, Nasua nasua Puma yagouaroundi. The nocturnal species observed Dasypus novemcinctus, Tamandua tetradactyla Procyon cancrivorus. Didelphis aurita, Leopardus pardalis L. wiedii tendencies. Cerdocyon thous tended be more crepuscular than nocturnal....
Capturing small carnivores is often necessary for obtaining key ecological data. We compared the efficiency of box and leg-hold traps, using live dead bait, to capture six carnivore species (Herpailurus yagouaroundi (É. Geoffroyi, 1803), Leopardus tigrinus (Schreber, 1775), Nasua nasua (Linnaeus, 1766), Cerdocyon thous Eira barbara 1758), Galictis cuja (Molina, 1782)). The use traps significantly increased rate (5.77%) non-target (non-carnivores, 11.54%). Dead bait attracted more...
We analyzed 63 cases of dental anomalies from 62 specimens a total sample 516 the Atlantic population South American sea lions, Otaria byronia de Blainville, 1820. The were represented by 53 missing upper post-canine 6 (second molars), seven maxillary or mandibular extra teeth, two 'dentes geminatis'; and one case reduced teeth. Considering phylogenetic framework where all otariid species basal Pinnipedimorpha are included, could be related to evolutionary trends in Otariidae towards...

We report the first confirmed record of Platyrrhinus recifinus to Santa Catarina state, south Brazil. The distribution this species was expanded approximately 350 km its previous known limit.
Abstract Bats of the Phyllostomidae family exhibit different reproductive patterns in Neotropical regions and strategy adopted depends on regional climate. Here we studied biology Artibeus fimbriatus at southern limit their distribution Brazil. This region has no rainy season, climate is characterized by high temperatures variable photoperiods. We examined 129 A. females over several months, used histological procedures where necessary order to determine whether bats were pregnant. Females...
