Soil vestiges might provide information about a crime scene. The Rietveld method with X-ray diffraction data (RM-XRD) is nondestructive technique that makes it possible to characterize minerals present in the soils. clays from metropolitan region of Curitiba (Brazil) were submitted DCB treatment and analyzed using XRD CuKα radiation step-scan mode (0.02° 2θ/5 s). GSAS+EXPGUI software was used for RM refinement. RM-XRD results, together principal component analysis (PCA) (52.6% total...
Soils are a complex mixture with variety of mineralogical, chemical, biological and physical properties, which can be explored within forensic case work. This study aimed to apply energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic techniques discriminate soil samples collected in southern Brazil context. Four replicates were at four sites: two sites from the same parent material (claystone) other limestone granite/gneiss respectively. The chemical...
Abstract Soils have distinctive chemical, physical, mineralogical and biological properties, which make it possible to differentiate them in different environments also test for an association of a particular questioned item with crime scene. Mineral compositions structures the soil clay fraction can reflect distinct characteristic when analyzed by powerful techniques. In this way, aim study was compare discriminative power Fe‐oxides concentrated samples from same class without differences...
This work reports for the first time on use of open photoacoustic cell technique operating at very low frequencies and room temperature to experimentally determine thermal diffusivity parameter commercial AISI304 stainless steel nitrided samples. Complementary measurements X-ray diffraction scanning electron microscopy were also performed. The results show that in standard AISI 304 samples is (4.0 ± 0.3) × 10−6 m2/s. After nitriding process, increases value (7.1 0.5) are being associated...
Abstract Soil traces can be used as evidence in criminal investigations due their transferability, great variability and persistence. The soil samples originated from a crime scene that occurred the Curitiba Metropolitan Region, Brazil. Physical, chemical mineralogical analyses were carried out on samples. All results statistically analysed using multivariate analysis (PCA) to verify relative positioning of which had been recovered stolen safety deposit box (SDB) vehicle suspected being SDB...
The term hardsetting is used to describe tropical soil horizons, which are highly weathered and present high hardness degree when dry, becoming friable humid. Some studies revealed that in these soils, the Kaolinite tends isomorphic substitutions, Fe atoms substitute Al their octahedral sites, deforming its crystalline structures. Thus, objective of this study was analyze substitution through X-ray Diffraction Rietveld Method (XRD-RM) compare it with microdeformation average values...
HIGHLIGHTS Semi-quantitative elemental analysis of the soils was accomplished through EDXRF. The µ, PA, CS and IS hardsetting soil fractions calculated by using XCOM computer code. mineralogical composition determined RM-XRD. With PCA possible to discriminate correlate IS.
Use of soil in forensic science is related to its several chemical, physical, and biological properties associated with capacity adhere different materials surfaces. Forensic experts police investigators have been using samples as an aid criminal investigations. Soils can act fingerprints because they present contrasting biological, mineralogical properties. However, depending on the analytical tools utilized characterize soil, differentiating when similar might [...]
