Abstract This study analyzes the two‐dimensional speed profiles of 107 stepped leaders and 93 dart recorded by high‐speed cameras in Utah (USA), together with data from lightning location system. The results shows that final average leader has a very strong ( R = 0.82) 0.71) correlation peak current return stroke. It also 91% increased their near ground (average increase 69%). same analysis for weak prospective stroke 0.39 to 0.28 speed). paper briefly discusses why is better correlated than...
Abstract In this paper, we present the first high‐speed video observation of a cloud‐to‐ground lightning flash and its associated downward‐directed Terrestrial Gamma‐ray Flash (TGF). The optical emission event was observed by camera running at 40,000 frames per second in conjunction with Telescope Array Surface Detector, Lightning Mapping Array, interferometer, electric‐field fast antenna, National Detection Network. TGF formed downward leader followed very intense return stroke peak current...
Optical emissions associated with Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) have recently become important subjects in space-based and ground-based observations since these play crucial roles understanding the generation of TGFs during thunderstorms. In this paper, we present first time-resolved leader spectra optical component a downward TGF. The TGF was observed at Telescope Array Surface Detector (TASD) simultaneously other lightning detectors, including Lightning Mapping (LMA), an...

This study analyzes the two-dimensional speed profiles of 107 stepped leaders and 93 dart recorded by high-speed cameras in Utah (USA), together with data from lightning location system (NLDN). The results show that leader right before ground contact (final speed) has a very strong correlation (R = 0.85) peak current initiated return stroke. It also shows between average stroke is 0.73). same analysis for did not any significant prospective 0.41 to R 0.29 final speed). paper discusses why...
Abstract Optical emissions associated with Terrestrial Gamma ray Flashes (TGFs) have recently become important subjects in space‐based and ground‐based observations as they can help us understand how TGFs are produced during thunderstorms. In this paper, we present the first time‐resolved leader spectra of optical component a downward TGF. The TGF was observed by Telescope Array Surface Detector (TASD) simultaneously other lightning detectors, including Lightning Mapping (LMA), an...
Abstract On 11 September 2021, two small thunderstorms developed over the Telescope Array Surface Detector (TASD) that produced an unprecedented number of six downward terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) within one‐hour timeframe. The TGFs occurred during initial stage negative cloud‐to‐ground whose return strokes had increasingly large peak currents up to 223 kA, 147 GeV energy deposit in 25 1.2 km‐spaced surface detectors, and intermittent bursts gamma‐rays with total durations 717 s....
