Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) has rarely been reported in the hospital setting. We report an outbreak of 7 cases skin and soft tissue infections due to a strain CA-MRSA.All patients were admitted labor delivery, nursery, or maternity units during 3-week period.Genetic fingerprinting showed that was closely related USA 400 includes midwestern MW2.All isolates contained staphylococcal chromosome cassette mec type IV.Genes for Panton-Valentine...

This study was performed to compare clinical characteristics and outcomes between patients with bloodstream infections (BSIs) caused by Candida auris those BSIs other spp.A multicenter retrospective case-control at 3 hospitals in Brooklyn, New York, 2016 2020. The analysis included ≥18 years of age who had a positive blood culture for any spp. were treated empirically an echinocandin. primary outcome the 30-day mortality rate. Secondary 14-day failure, 90-day rate, 60-day microbiologic...
Abstract Background Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) is a pathogen linked to significant morbidity and mortality. CDC reported that the incidence of MSSA bloodstream infections (MSSA-BSI) significantly increased from 2012 2017, though mortality rates were unchanged. The COVID-19 pandemic may affect MSSA-BSI due use dexamethasone, delay in diagnosis quarantine, or misdiagnosis BSI as COVID-19. Our objective was compare outcomes community-onset pre- post-pandemic. Methods...
Abstract Background Staphylococcus lugdunensis (SL), a coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CoNS), usually skin commensal, has demonstrated similar virulence to aureus. Current studies have compared SL bacteremia (SLB) S. aureus bacteremia, primarily hospital-onset methicillin-resistant bacteremia. Our study is the first compare clinical characteristics and outcomes between community-acquired MSSA (SAB).Table 1:Patient Demographics Methods This retrospective cohort evaluated hospitalized...
Introduction: Infections with carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (CRGNB) are increasing and associated a high mortality. Synergistic effects of combination therapy polymyxin, carbapenem, rifampin have been observed in vitro studies. Clinical data limited to retrospective Methods: We performed an observational cohort study patients over 18 y age who were treated polymyxin B therapy. Results: One hundred four studied. The mean was 77 y; 73% had recently received antibiotics, 67%...
Neurocysticercosis cases were identified in 1991 an Orthodox Jewish community. Transmission was linked to tapeworm-infected immigrant housekeepers from countries where Taenia solium is endemic. To evaluate the extent of and risks for locally acquired cysticercosis, a seroprevalence survey conducted 9% households this Cysticercosis antibodies detected 23 (1.3%) 1,789 persons 612 families. All seropositive asymptomatic, no intracerebral lesions found 21 who underwent brain imaging....
Serious infections due to group A β-hemolytic streptococcus (GABHS) have been reported with increasing frequency in recent years. We report a case of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) GABHS pharyngitis an otherwise healthy 14-year-old boy. The organism was found produce toxin A. To our knowledge, this is the second streptococcal TSS associated production that not invasive disease and first documented rise level antibody itself. Clinicians must be especially vigilant for entity patients who because...
Parenteral polymyxin use declined after the 1960s, due to safety concerns. An increase in multidrug-resistant (MDR) gram-negative infections and a shortage of new agents have prompted increased parenteral polymyxin. To describe our clinical experience with B for MDR bacteremia urinary tract infection (UTI).Paper pharmacy records were used identify patients aged 18 years or older, presence UTI, at least 48 hours. Electronic paper patient then retrospectively reviewed. Polymyxin susceptibility...
Intrapartum transmission of group A streptococcus has not been well documented. As the incidence severe infections due to this organism recently increased, it is important assess if such occurs. We observed two cases neonatal streptococcus, one which was fatal, that appeared have transmitted from mother during birth. Perinatal prophylaxis, recommended for B should be evaluated streptococcus.
Abstract We performed a randomized prospective study of 5-day treatment with topical mupirocin or bacitracin for the elimination Staphylococcus aureus nasal colonization in healthcare workers (HCWs). Nasal cultures were obtained from 141 HCWs, 37 (26%) whom showed S aureus. After 72 to 96 hours treatment, organism was eradicated 15 (94%) 16 by and 8 (44%) 18 ( P =.0031). Similar efficacy demonstrated at 30 days. Mupirocin may be more effective than eradication healthy HCWs.
Clostridium difficile caused nearly 500,000 infections and was associated with approximately 29,000 deaths in 2011, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control Prevention. C. is a bacterium that causes diarrhea and, often, severe illness healthcare facilities, as well community. Our objective determine whether alkaline colonic pH predisposes colonization infection difficile.A total of 228 patients and/or abdominal pain, leukocytosis, fever were included. Stool measured, antigen...
Staphylococcus lugdunensis (S. lugdunensis) is a coagulase negative staphylococcus (CoNS) that can cause destructive infective endocarditis. S. lugdunensis, unlike other CoNS, should be considered to pathogen. We report the first case of endocarditis causing ventricular septal defect and destruction aortic mitral valves. A 53-year-old male with morbid obesity COPD presented intermittent fever progressive shortness breath for 2 weeks. Chest examination showed bilateral basal crepitations,...
In a community hospital in Brooklyn, New York, over 3-year period, 79 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates from five different case clusters were subtyped by Southern blot hybridization with two previously characterized gene probes, mec and Tn554. Together, the genotyping enabled infection control team to differentiate simultaneous MRSA surgical intensive care unit (type I:A) open heart II:J), document spread of one strain between roommates, identify an endemic II:J)...
Abstract. A case of acute hepatitis induced by zidovudine in a 38‐year‐old patient with AIDS is presented. The mechanism whereby the was not known. However, tolerated well an alternative reverse transcriptase inhibitor, 2′ 3′ dideoxyinosine. Physicians caring for patients should be aware this hitherto rarely reported complication.
Drug induced toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens Johnson syndrome are more commonly associated with medications such as sulfonamides, penicillin, anticonvulsants, oxicam non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, allopurinol corticosteroids. Isolated instances secondary to drugs outside of the aforementioned classes have also been reported. We report a case probable by fluconazole in 52 year old woman.
Mycobacterium abscessus, which is ubiquitous environmental organism, more likely to cause pulmonary infection in the presence underlying lung disease and immunosuppression. We report a case of due coinfection tuberculosis (MTB) abscessus (M. abscessus) an immunocompetent patient without disease. Healthcare professionals should be aware co-infection with MTB M. treatment based on clinical suspicion and/or epidemiological circumstances.
Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by an intraerythrocytic parasite, commonly seen in developing countries. Approximately 1500 cases of malaria are diagnosed the United States each year, mostly travelers immigrants returning from endemic areas [1]. There many different regimens used to treat malaria, some which not approved USA. The side effects these medications may be familiar physicians We report case traveler Nigeria presenting with fever hemolytic anemia delayed...
