The amount of image data generated each day in health care is ever increasing, especially combination with the improved scanning resolutions and importance volumetric sets. Handling these images raises requirement for efficient compression, archival transmission techniques. Currently, JPEG 2000׳s core coding system, defined Part 1, default choice medical as it DICOM-supported compression technique offering best available performance this type data. Yet, 2000 provides many options that allow...
With the advent of modern computing and imaging technologies, digital holography is becoming widespread in various scientific disciplines such as microscopy, interferometry, surface shape measurements, vibration analysis, data encoding, certification. Therefore, designing an efficient representation technology particular importance. Off-axis holograms have very different signal properties with respect to regular imagery, because they represent a recorded interference pattern its energy...
This paper reports results of subjective and objective quality assessments responses to a grand challenge on light field image compression. The goal the was collect evaluate new compression algorithms for images. In total seven proposals were received, out which five accepted further evaluations. For evaluations, conventional metrics used, whereas double stimulus continuous scale method selected perform assessments. Results show competitive performance among submitted proposals. However, in...
Holography allows for both the recording and reproduction of wavefields light, is thereby able to fully capture three-dimensional structure objects. The appearance object will change according position orientation viewer, providing an immersive experience as if objects are actually present. Moreover, holograms have many applications in metrology such microscopy interferometry. Because represent interference patterns, they possess significantly different signal properties from natural...
Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) XS is a new International Standard from the JPEG Committee (formally known as ISO/International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) JTC1/SC29/WG1). It defines an interoperable, visually lossless low-latency lightweight image coding that can be used for mezzanine compression within any AV market. Among targeted use cases, one cite video transport over professional links (serial digital interface (SDI), internet protocol (IP), and Ethernet), real-time...
Recently several papers reported efficient techniques to compress digital holograms. Typically, the rate-distortion performance of these solutions was evaluated by means objective metrics such as Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) or Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) either evaluating quality decoded hologram reconstructed compressed hologram. Seen specific nature holograms, it is relevant question what extend provide information on effective visual Given that today no holographic...

Significant research efforts have been invested in attempting reliably capture and visualize holograms since their inception 1962. However, less attention has given efficient digital representation of recorded holograms, which differ...
With the advent of modern computing and imaging technologies, use digital holography became practical in many applications such as microscopy, interferometry, non-destructive testing, data encoding, certification. In this respect need for an efficient representation technology becomes imminent. However, microscopic holographic off-axis recordings have characteristics that differ significantly from regular natural imagery, because they represent a recorded interference pattern mainly...
In March 2016 the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG), formally known as ISO/IEC SC29 WG1, issued a call for proposals soliciting compression technologies low-latency, lightweight and visually transparent video scheme. Within JPEG family of standards, this scheme was denominated XS. The subjective evaluation lossless compressed sequences at high resolutions bit depths poses particular challenges. This paper describes adopted procedures, setup, process summarizes obtained results which...
Visually lossless image coding in isochronous display streaming or plesiochronous networks reduces link complexity and power consumption increases available bandwidth. A new set of codecs developed within the last four years promise a level quality, but require techniques that are sufficiently sensitive to small artifacts color variations induced by this breed codecs. The size of medical data has increased significantly over the last few years. This poses severe problems for rapid transmission across hospital network resulting into longer access times images. Also longterm storage becomes more and a problem. In an attempt to overcome increasing often lossless or lossy compression algorithms are being used. paper compares existing JPEG2000 algorithm new emerging JP3D standard volumetric datasets. main benefit is that this truly 3D exploits correlation not...
The JPEG standard has known an enormous market adoption. Daily, billions of pictures are created, stored and exchanged in this format. committee acknowledges success spends continued efforts maintaining expanding the specifications. XT is a standardization effort targeting extension features by enabling support for high dynamic range imaging, lossless near-lossless coding, alpha channel while also guaranteeing backward forward compatibility with legacy This paper gives overview current...
The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) committee is a joint working group of the International Standardization Organization (ISO) and Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). word "Joint" in JPEG however does not refer to efforts ISO IEC, but fact that activities are result an additional collaboration with Telecommunication Union (ITU). Inspired by technology market evolutions, i.e. advent wavelet need for functionality such as scalability, launched 1997 new standardization process would 2000...
In this paper, we examine the rate-distortion performance in terms of perceptual quality JPEG XR (ISO/IEC 29199-2 | ITU-T Rec. T.832)1 and earlier standardized image compression algorithms such as 10918-1 T.81)2 2000 15444-1 T.800)3. Unfortunately, objective visual metrics (like MSE, PSNR, VQM, SSIM, etc.) do not always correlate well with actual perceived quality. some specific cases, it is even possible that certain visible coding artifacts remain undetectable by these tests. As such,...
The JPEG2000 standard is currently widely adopted in medical and volumetric data compression. In this respect, a 3D extension (JPEG2000 Part 10 - JP3D) being standardized. However, no suitable context model yet available within the standard, such that context-based arithmetic entropy coder of JP3D still uses 2D 1. paper, we propose design algorithm that, based on training set, generates an optimized model, while avoiding exhaustive search at same time keeping space complexities well limits...
Significant research has been performed on the use of directional transforms for compression still imagery, in particular application block-based and segmentation driven adaptive discrete wavelet transforms. However, all proposed methodologies suffer from extra side-information that needs to be encoded. This encoding overhead added complexity is unfortunately not negligible. paper describes various considerations trade-offs were made during search towards a practical solution using image...
The JPEG XS [1,2,3] activity started around 2015 to address the problem of ever- increasing bandwidth requirements for transmitting video content in professional production environments. In such environments, ultra-low latency, low complexity, and visually lossless image quality are key features, ruling out existing state art compression technology. A paradigm shift was needed find a solution where these three features were prioritized over pure performance.
This is an updated report of the work Joint Technical Committee International Standardization and Organization for (ISO/IEC JTC1 SC29/WG1), better known as JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) Committee. This paper discusses an OpenCL version of a volumetric JPEG 2000 codec that runs on GPUs, multi-core processors or combination both. Since the performance critical part consists fine-grained (discrete wavelet transform) and coarse-grained algorithm (Tier-1), best is obtained with hybrid execution in which discrete transform executed GPU Tier-1 multi-core. Using Intel i7 modest NVIDIA Quadro K620 yields speedups greater than 10 compared original sequential code. The bottlenecks arise GPUs...
