The hydrogen environmentally-assisted cracking (HEAC) behaviour of new generation (new-gen) Al-Zn-Mg-Cu thick-plate alloys (AA7449, AA7085, and AA7037), under accelerated humid warm-air exposure, has been compared to the aerospace industry benchmark alloy AA7050 in over-aged T7x type tempers. Constant load time-to-failure DCB crack growth tests have performed at a relative humidity 85 %, 70 °C. It found that constant failure time can be reduced by least an order magnitude some cases was...

Large area, time resolved, in-situ optical scanning of constant displacement (four-point bend) tests has been used to monitor the environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) initiation and crack growth behaviour AA7085 AA7449 T7651 thick plate materials, exposed warm-humid air (50 % RH & 70 °C). Subsequent fractography revealed dominant sites originating at surface connected gas pore clusters, in combination with reactive Mg-containing constituent intermetallic compounds co-located on grain...

New generation (new-gen) 7xxx series alloys have recently been shown to higher susceptibility environmental assisted cracking (EAC) in humid air, compared AA7050, T7651 tempers. Hydrogen (H)-EAC fracture features of brittle intergranular (IG) and transgranular (TG) modes were observed with humidity levels as low 20%. Initiation was favoured at sites intermetallic particle clusters gas pores. The performance AA7050 attributed the difficulty initiation this alloy, where grain structure,...

Recent experience has shown that new-generation 7xxx-series alloys, have a high Zn content and Zn/Mg ratios, greater susceptibility to hydrogen-environmental induced cracking (H-EIC) on exposure humid air than more established materials, like AA7050. In this study, we report new evidence of the EIC initiation crack growth behavior two AA7085 AA7449, when exposed 50% humidity. situ, time-lapse, optical imaging over large areas enabled exact sites be identified investigated with...

This paper describes the use of luminol electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) to image re-distribution electrochemically active copper (copper in electrical contact with substrate) at surface AA2024-T351 corroding NaCl electrolyte. AA2024 samples are thermo-mechanically treated produce a macroscopically inhomogeneous distribution intermetallic particles. The allowed corrode by immersion 0.51 M aqueous and (ex-situ) ECL measurements performed follow re-distribution. Luminol light emission...

This paper describes a high-throughput study into the role of Mg in preventing corrosion driven coating disbondment organic coatings from Zn-Mg alloy galvanized steel. A graded wedge is applied to hot-dip zinc galvanised steel substrate using physical vapour deposition, and subsequently annealed produce metallic inter-diffusion formation 2 Zn 11 intermetallic. An overcoat electrically insulating polyvinyl butyral (PVB) initiated penetrative defect an aqueous electrolyte. The variation weight...

A novel electrochemical technique is described, which capable of imaging the distribution 'electrically-connected' copper on surface alloys such as AA2024 and following redistribution accompanies localized corrosion. Here, term signifies that in electrical contact with both substrate overlying electrolyte therefore influencing The process employs luminol (3- aminophthalhydrazide), emits light through electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) when anodically oxidized weakly alkaline...
