This paper examines some recent analyses of alternative agro‐food networks (AAFNs) and claims that these innovative modes food provisioning are emblematic a new rural development paradigm in Western Europe. A political‐economic critique the territorialised, farm‐centric value added strategies underlying suggests this characterisation is overdrawn premature. The neglect consumption side equation also argues for more modest assessment AAFNs their paradigmatic potential.

Recent analyses of the restructuring agro‐food system draw uncritically on industrial literature, notably regulation theory and Fordism/post‐Fordism debates capitalist transition. We question extension this periodisation conceptual framework to political economy agrarian restructuring. also interrogate theoretical foundations several related literatures concerned with international food regimes, 'new internationalisation' agriculture, repositioning agriculture‐industry relations,...

The objective of this study was to assess the neuroautonomic cardiovascular regulation in recently concussed athletes at rest and response low-moderate steady-state exercise, using heart rate variability (HRV).A 5-min ECG sample taken from 14 1.8 (+/- 0.2) days postinjury again 5 d later. Once asymptomatic rest, their matched controls (N = 14) participated an exercise protocol. protocol consisted a 2-min warm-up with pedaling frequency between 50 60 rpm against load 40 W. After warm-up,...
This paper examines the question of ontological choice in agro‐food studies, and emphasizes that such choices are consequential, determining analytical points entry, arenas theory praxis, normative positioning. These questions explored by examining privileged place labour process development studies and, as a more specific illustration, analyses agro‐biotechnology. It is suggested modernist priorities embedded unreconstructed conceptualization not only have been ignored but also found an...
This study compared five methods for detecting the eggs of human parasitic geohelminths Ascaris, Trichuris, and hookworm in infant stool, describes epidemiology infection infants from a parasite-endemic area. A total 424 5-11 months old were enrolled three villages on Pemba Island, Zanzibar. Methods used included Kato-Katz technique, formol ethyl acetate sedimentation, modified Wisconsin floatation, simple gravity sedimentation. Of alone, floatation sedimentation each provided highest...
Abstract Although Marx and Engels wrote relatively little about agriculture the subsequent discussion has been in inverse proportion to amount they wrote. This paper analyses recent contributions this body of theory, notably problems presented by simple commodity production agriculture, arguing that many these originate specific historical situations. It is suggested other distinctions Marx's work are more rewarding pursue, such as distinction between formal real subsumption under...
