$\ensuremath{\alpha}$-RuCl${}_{3}$ is a candidate for realizing the Kitaev quantum spin liquid state. Despite extensive research efforts, its crystal structure at temperatures relevant to studying physics has been controversial. Here, authors examine single with minimal twinning and stacking faults, allowing them unambiguously determine symmetry change across structural phase transition. They find that three-fold rotational of honeycomb plane restored in low-temperature group...

Abstract We report x-ray diffraction and resonant elastic scattering (REXS) studies on two α-RuCl3 crystals with distinct magnetic transition temperatures: TN =7.3K 6.5K. find that the sample =6.5K exhibits a high degree of stacking faults structural twinning at low temperature, whereas primarily comprises single domain R-3. Notwithstanding, both samples exhibit an identical zigzag structure, moments pointing away from honeycomb plane by α = 31(2)◦. argue ordered moment directions in these...

We report field-dependent high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on the honeycomb lattice magnet, ${\mathrm{CoTiO}}_{3}$, to study evolution of its magnon excitations across a spin reorientation transition driven by an in-plane magnetic field. By carrying out elastic in field, we show that sample transitions from collinear antiferromagnetic state with multiple domains at low field monodomain canted structure high Concurrent this transition, observed significant...

We report X-ray diffraction and magnetic susceptibility studies of the structural phase transition in $\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$. By utilizing a single crystal sample with predominantly twin domain, we show that $\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ goes from high-temperature C2/m structure to rhombohedral R$\bar{3}$ symmetry at low temperature. While defining feature is changing stacking direction monoclinic a-axis b-axis, bond-anisotropy disappears when change occurs, indicating local $C_3$ restored within...
