Abstract: With more than 56,000 species (excluding fungi), Brazil has one of the richest floras in world—nearly 19% world flora. Our knowledge diversity and status nonvascular plants is still fragmentary, although localized studies on algae have revealed loss resulting from environmental pollution. Emphasis local floral surveys, rather wider taxonomic studies, obscured estimates national totals for most groups. Knowledge angiosperms, especially monocotyledons (of which 45% are endemic),...
The genus Alcantarea comprises near 30 species endemic to rocky outcrops from eastern Brazil. Most are ornamental and several threatened due habitat loss over collection. In this paper we examine the phylogenetics of its relationship with Brazilian members Vriesea, a which has been treated as subgenus. We discuss morphological evolution stamen position implication for pollination occurrence in Espinhaço mountain range savanna-like vegetation. DNA sequence data derived two plastid markers...
A checklist of the 14 genera and 34 species Bromeliaceae from Parque Estadual do Rio Preto in Sao Goncalo municipality, Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil, is presented. The Tillandsioideae was most diverse subfamily found to be concentrated rocky field areas. Bromelioideae also a rich subfamily, but its taxa have shown preference forested areas savannas at lower altitudes. Pitcairnioideae highlighted by level endemism, has only four species. Cryptanthus micrus, new this area described...
Inselbergs are terrestrial, island-like rock outcrop environments that present a highly adapted flora. The epilithic bromeliad Encholirium spectabile is dominant species on inselbergs in the Caatinga of northeastern Brazil. We conducted population genetic analysis to test whether substantial phenotypic diversity E. could be explained by limited gene flow among populations and assess relative impact pollen vs. seed dispersal structure species.Nuclear chloroplast microsatellite markers were...
In this paper we describe and illustrate Orthophytum argentum as a new species from campos rupestres of Espinhaço Range, morphologically similar to toscanoi.
The species related to Vriesea paraibica (Bromeliaceae, Tillandsioideae) have controversial taxonomic limits. For several decades, this group has been identified in herbarium collections as V. × morreniana, an artificial hybrid that does not grow natural habitats. aim of study was assess the morphological variation V. complex through morphometric analyses populations. Two sets were performed: first involved six populations (G1) and second carried out on taxa emerged from analysis, but using...
The taxonomic treatment of Xyridaceae for the project "Flora Serra do Cipó, Minas Gerais, Brasil" is presented. family represented in that area by 58 species genus Xyris Gronov. ex L. X.sparsifolia Kral & L.B. Sm. and X. spinulosa are new records Gerais consanguinea Kunth glandacea A. Nilsson rediscovered. trichophylla Malme proposed as a synonym minarum Seub. Three described: pirapamae Wand. J. Guedes, shepherdiana Guedes atrospicata all them endemic to area. Descriptions taxa, key...
The genus Vriesea Lindl. comprises about 290 species distributed into two sections: V. sect. and Xiphion. is recognized as polyphyletic historically associated with Tillandsia L., differing from it mainly due to the presence of petal appendages. Here we focus our efforts on taxa in its main center diversity southeastern Brazil that are considered constitute a monophyletic group based molecular analyses well total evidence approach. We present morphological description Brazilian lineage,...
Alcantarea (Bromeliaceae) has 26 species that are endemic to eastern Brazil, occurring mainly on gneiss–granitic rock outcrops (‘inselbergs’). great ornamental potential and several cultivated in gardens. Limited data is available the literature regarding leaf anatomical features of genus, though it been shown may provide valuable information for characterizing Bromeliaceae taxa. In present work, we employed anatomy better characterize genus understand its radiation into harsh environments,...
Vriesea, with about 280 species distributed in two sections, Vriesea and Xiphion, is recognized as polyphyletic. We provide the cladistic analysis based on morphological data, emphasis from eastern Brazil, its main center of diversity, which emerged a monophyletic group previous molecular combined analysis. The data matrix contained information 60 Alcantarea, for total 62 terminal taxa 66 characters. produced one tree 652 steps. classic infrage- neric division sections was not corroborated....
The inflorescences in Bromeliaceae are indeterminate, supported by a terminal scape of variable size, and with bracts position, number, colour, shape texture. Aechmea is the most diverse genus Bromelioideae (c. 220 species) having large size shape. subgenus Chevaliera comprises 21 taxa distributed throughout Central South America, centre species richness eastern Brazil. A study inflorescence morphology 15 Brazilian presented here (A. alopecurus, A. castanea, conifera, depressa, digitata,...
