Student experience surveys have become increasingly popular to probe various aspects of processes and outcomes in higher education, such as measuring student perceptions the learning environment identifying that could be improved. This paper reports on a particular survey for evaluating individual experiments has been developed over some 15 years part large national Australian study pertaining area undergraduate laboratories—Advancing Science by Enhancing Learning Laboratory. development...
The disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic caused academic staff from around world to convert online methods teaching. At University Western Australia, this transition was implemented half way through semester one. This commentary provides an overview changes made for a physical chemistry first year unit. We provide analysis into lessons that we learned having gone process and how can use experience improve unit in future.
<p>While blended learning has been around for sometime, the interplay between lecture recordings, attendance and grades needs further examination particularly large cohorts of over 1000 students in 500 seat theatres. This paper reports on such an investigation with a cohort 1450 first year psychology students’ who indicated whether they frequently attended lectures or not. The division helped ascertain differences similarities preferences utilising online recordings. Overall,...
For nearly two decades, the Australian national project Advancing Science and Engineering through Laboratory Learning (ASELL), has been using an evidence based approach to improve undergraduate experiments. This paper presents ASELL Students Experience (ASLE) survey, administered 2691 students in five disciplines: biochemistry, biology, chemistry, physics, pharmacology. The 14 item survey probes students’ perceptions of experiment, practical or fieldwork. An exploratory factor analysis...

Abstract It is well accepted that the purpose of physics laboratory classes to not only help students gain an understanding concepts, but also them develop their scientific skills. One such skill ability undertake science inquiry design experiment investigate a research question, thereby enhancing students’ higher order thinking Engaging in and experimental consists five sub-skills. These include identifying variables be measured, developing procedure, selecting equipment materials,...
