We evaluated seabird attendance and incidental mortality at coastal trawl vessels targeting Argentine red shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) in the Isla Escondida fishing area, Argentina, during 2006–2007 2007–2008. Eight species attended vessels, most frequent abundant (percent occurrence, mean number per haul) two seasons was Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus) (100%, 112.3 100%, 263.4, respectively), followed by Black-browed Albatross (Thalassarche melanophris) (85%, 17.6, 90%, 32.4, respectively)....

Abstract Seabird bycatch in fisheries, and the development of effective mitigation to minimize this, have been subject increasing research attention over past three four decades. Trawl fisheries represent a particular challenge, as bird mortalities (especially highly threatened albatrosses large petrels, Procellariforms) occur primarily through difficult-to-detect collisions with warp net monitoring cables. Effectiveness bird-scaring lines (BSLs) measure can be fleet-specific, studies...

We assessed the potential overlap in diet composition of kelp gull Larus dominicanus and threatened Olrog's L. atlanticus breeding syntopically at Bahía San Blas, Argentina, during two seasons (2006 2007). Diet was studied using regurgitated pellets (180 per species year) chick stomach samples obtained through water offloading technique (60 only Kelp gulls fed on least 18 prey types. Fish most important component (73.3–85%, depending stage year), mainly stripped weakfish Cynoscion guatucupa...

Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus) foraging patterns were studied by deploying GPS loggers on 20 incubating individuals at their colony in the Bahía San Blas protected area, Argentina. Mean number of trips per day was 1.5 ± 0.5, and mean trip duration 272.6 165.2 min. maximum distance from 19.6 24.4 km. Incubating Gulls visited natural anthropogenic environments. Individuals switched between two or three different habitat types 47% time during a given trip. showed differential use feeding areas,...

Abstract We assessed Kelp Gull ( Larus dominicanus ) diet composition complementing conventional and stable isotope methods to determine the relevance of food derived from recreational fisheries. To achieve this goal, we quantified breeding at Bahía San Blas protected area, Argentina, between 2012 2014, assessing differences among four colonies, stages years. Diet analyses were based on pellets n = 1054), chick stomach content samples 351) analysis adult whole blood 20 40, respectively)....

The knowledge of seabird breeding distribution and abundance is important for their management conservation. We present information on the gulls terns gathered between 2006–2013 at Reserva Natural de Usos Múltiples Bahía San Blas, Buenos Aires Province. recorded nesting eight species, in most cases mixedspecies colonies. During 2013, we counted 3635 nests Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus) distributed 4 colonies, 359 Olrog’s atlanticus) 2 6 Brown-hooded maculipennis), 841 Royal Tern (Thalasseus...

Several studies have applied induced regurgitations to characterize the diet of cormorants, but none presented quantitative information indicating complete stomach contents were obtained. Our goal was test value for assessment and monitoring Imperial Cormorant (Phalacrocorax atriceps) diet. Samples through regurgitation, immediately afterward each...

In the present work, regression equations were generated to estimate wet weight from total length, and length skull pectoral girdle bones of Odontesthes nigricans. All regressions statistically significant. No significant differences found in weight-total relationship between males females, showing a positive allometric growth length. The obtained are tool for research trophic ecology, allowing broader evaluation role lagoon silverside diet piscivorous predators.
