Tracking a bug's life: Peptidoglycan (PG) of diverse bacteria is labeled by exploiting the tolerance cells for incorporating different non-natural D-amino acids. These nontoxic acids preferably label sites active PG synthesis, thereby enabling fine spatiotemporal tracking cell-wall dynamics in phylogenetically and morphologically bacteria. HCC=7-hydroxycoumarin, NBD=7-nitrobenzofurazan, TAMRA=carboxytetramethylrhodamine. Bacterial growth controlled peptidoglycan cell wall, rigid essential...
Elongation of many rod-shaped bacteria occurs by peptidoglycan synthesis at discrete foci along the sidewall cells. However, within Rhizobiales, there are budding bacteria, in which new cell growth is constrained to a specific region. The phylogeny Rhizobiales indicates that this mode zonal may be ancestral. We demonstrate bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens grows unidirectionally from pole generated after division and has an atypical composition. Polar under all conditions tested, including...
This study compares substance use disorder (SUD) patients with and without a comorbid diagnosis of posttraumatic stress (PTSD) on their addiction psychiatric services over the 6-month period before an inpatient abuse admission. Compared non-PTSD patients, PTSD had greater number hospital overnights for treatment. Given no significant between-groups differences any indexes, apparently overuse costly services. Despite rates comorbidity, did not receive treatment problems at than patients....
Summary The attachment of bacteria to surfaces provides advantages such as increasing nutrient access and resistance environmental stress. Attachment begins with a reversible phase, often mediated by surface structures flagella pili, followed transition irreversible attachment, typically polysaccharides. Here we show that the interplay between pili flagellum rotation stimulates rapid polysaccharide‐mediated attachment. We found Caulobacter crescentus cells is motile bearing their contact...
Previous studies have identified traumatic exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as predictors of physical health complaints without considering the relationship between PTSD. This study examined unique associations war-zone PTSD with perceived outcomes in a nontreatment-seeking sample 109 female veterans Vietnam War who responded to series psychological, exposure, questionnaires. Both were associated reports negative when each variable was not adjusted for other. The effects...
Several studies have documented the preference for physicians to attend impression and plan section of a clinical document. However, it is not clear how much attention other sections document receive. The goal this study was identify distribute their visual while reading electronic notes. We used an eye-tracking device assess patterns ten hospitalists as they read three notes. assessment included time spent specific note well rates reading. This analysis compared with content simulated verbal...
In the environment, most bacteria form surface-attached cell communities called biofilms. The attachment of single cells to surfaces involves an initial reversible stage typically mediated by surface structures such as flagella and pili, followed a permanent adhesion usually polysaccharide adhesives. Here, we determine absolute relative timescales frequencies irreversible bacterium Caulobacter crescentus glass in microfluidic device. We used fluorescence microscopy C. expressing green...
In this design case, we describe our work to and develop a socio-scientific issue (SSI) based unit of instruction for use in high school biology. Our team includes university science educators, an experienced classroom teacher, microbiologist. The focuses on antibiotic resistant bacteria as context student exploration natural selection engagement modeling practices. recently presented model SSI that highlights: (a) focal issue, (b) interaction ideas practices, (c) social considerations, (d)...
Abstract Objective To evaluate a model of intensive case management for people with dementia based in community‐based mental health service older people. Method Quasi‐experimental design. Individuals one community team setting received and were compared those similar without such service. Fortythree matched pairs identified. Eligible their carers interviewed at uptake again 6 12 months. Results The impact the scheme upon placement occurred second year end which 51% experimental group...
