Abstract Carbon prices in the EU emissions trading system are a key instrument driving Europe’s decarbonization. Between 2017 and 2021, they surged tenfold, exceeding €80 tCO 2 −1 reshaping investment decisions across electricity industry sectors. What has driven this increase is an open question. While it coincided with two significant reforms tightening cap (‘MSR reform’ ‘Fit for 55’), we argue that reduced supply of allowances alone cannot fully explain price rise. A further crucial...

<title>Abstract</title> The EU emissions trading system (EU ETS) is a key driver behind Europe’s decarbonization. Coinciding with two major reforms to tighten the cap, prices have increased tenfold between 2017 and 2021 80 €/tCO2 above, completely changing investment decisions in electricity industry sectors. But can price movements be explained through these alone? We here argue that emission cap changes are not sufficient explain jumps offer more comprehensive explanation: Our results...

Recent reforms of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) boosted carbon prices by tightening cap on emission allowances and increasing political commitment to it, which effectively made actors more farsighted. Policymakers should thus view as an indicator credibility well scarcity, manage potential future drops in former renewing cap.

Abstract The European Green Deal aims to guide the Union towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by implementing a comprehensive set of policy initiatives and legislation. While emission reduction targets policies up 2030 are mostly implemented, it is high priority for EU legislation spell out further transformation climate neutrality defining interim 2040. Here we explore, based on an integrated energy-economy-climate model with sector detail, pathways achieve in under...
