The fundamental value of universal nomenclatural systems in biology is that they enable unambiguous scientific communication. However, the stability these threatened by recent discussions asking for a fairer nomenclature, raising possibility bulk revision processes "inappropriate" names. It evident such proposals come from very deep feelings, but we show how can irreparably damage foundation biological communication and, turn, sciences depend on it. There are four essential consequences...

The paper provides nomenclatural and taxonomic accounts on Tanacetum clusii , a diploid species found in the Eastern Alps, Carpathians, Dinarides, as well comments its current distribution. A careful examination of historic literature showed that combination T. was first proposed by Kerner predates currently used much younger isonym Soják (1871 vs. 1971). One specimen, karyovoucher from WU, is designated here an epitype for illegitimate name Pyrethrum upon which Chrysanthemum basionym based....

Range shifts (especially during the Pleistocene), polyploidisation and hybridization are major factors affecting high-mountain biodiversity. A good system to study their role in European high mountains is Doronicum clusii aggregate (Asteraceae), whose four taxa (D. s.s., D. stiriacum, glaciale subsp. calcareum) differentiated geographically, ecologically (basiphilous versus silicicolous) and/or via ploidy levels (diploid tetraploid). Here, we use DNA sequences (three plastid one nuclear...

A taxonomic and nomenclatural account on taxa of Iridaceae proposed by Ferdinand Schur, a famous investigator the flora Transylvania (present‐day Romania), is presented. Types are designated for 12 names, namely lectotypes Crocus banaticus var. niveus , C. exiguus Iris fieberi monantha I. × binata cucullata pseudocyperus transsilvanica sibirica salina neotypes concolor pictus versicolor pumila albiflora . Based broad examination Schur's original authentic material, application these as well...

Abstract The first records of Calamagrostis purpurea , an apomictic wetland grass species with a Euro-Siberian, predominantly boreal distribution, are reported for the Carpathians. This significantly expands species’ range in Central Europe eastwards from known localities Austria and Czechia. Due to situ finds revision herbarium vouchers, C. was discovered Western Carpathians Slovakia (the Nízke Tatry Mts) as well Eastern Ukraine Chornohora Romania (Dorna Depression, Harghita, Bodoc Mts,...

A new population of the Pancarpathian endemic species Arabidopsis neglecta was discovered in Svydovets Massif at Komyn 2018.It is fifth known so far for Svydovets.A short description subalpine-alpine scree habitat (Rumici scutati-Rhodioletum roseae) given. Many co-occuring are listed Red Data Book Ukraine (2009); however, A. not included current edition Ukraine.Though, its micropopulations on steep slopes glacial cirques highly vulnerable due to climate change and some other factors.

Distribution areas of narrowly endemic species in the European Alps often coincide with Pleistocene refugia, suggesting that allopatric divergence due to range shifts might have been instrumental their origin. Here, we infer phylogenetic position locally Doronicum cataractarum testing previous hypotheses respect its biogeographic and temporal origin (Tertiary southwest Asian affinities versus possibly Alps). To this end, extended existing genus-wide data sets nuclear plastid DNA sequences...

An up-to-date biography of Mihael Dimonie (1870–1935), an important Aromanian plant collector in the southern Balkan Peninsula, is presented. So far, he has been better known to linguists than botanists on account Codex and his contributions cultural heritage. His private herbarium collections were destroyed two separate fires 1917 1944, only numerous vouchers belonging Plantae Macedonicae series that had commercially distributed remain. Stellaria ruderalis is an annual (semi)ruderal species from the S. media group, which has been recently published by Lepší et al., therefore, its distribution range in Europe insufficiently known. This paper based on field exploration of 39 localities s.l. Lviv region, Western Ukraine. The first report Ukraine comes Dmytre village, where it grows at roadsides and arable edges a semiruderal habitat alliance Aegopodion podagrariae. As only single population was found, obviously still spreading...
