Urban agriculture is making an increasing contribution to food security in large cities around the world. The potential of biodiversity ecological intensification urban agricultural systems has not been investigated. We present monitoring data collected from rice fields 34 community farms mega-urban Shanghai, China, 2001 2015, and show that presence a border crop soybeans neighboring crops (maize, eggplant Chinese cabbage), both without weed control, increased invertebrate predator...

Cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) and oriental tobacco budworm assulta) are noctuid sibling species. Under artificial manipulation, they can mate produce fertile offspring. As serious agricultural insect pests, cotton bollworms euryphagous insects, but budworms oligophagous insects. To identify the differentially expressed genes that affect host recognition adaptation between two species, we constructed digital gene expression tag profiles for four developmental stages of...

Abstract BACKGROUND Interactions between herbivorous insects and entomoviruses may depend on host plant, perhaps mediated through changes in herbivore innate immunity. RESULTS Caterpillars ( Spodoptera exigua ) fed Glycine max had high viral loads low melanization rates together with enzyme [PO, DDC, TH] activities gene expressions. Ipomoea aquatica melanization, expressions while those Brassica oleracea or artificial diet intermediate levels of each. Melanization were negatively correlated...

Abstract Non-destructive and rapid monitoring methods for leaf chlorophyll fluorescence (CF) of rice is significance in estimating growing, enhancing more efficient application agrochemicals reducing yield loss. The present study investigated the use physiological indices calculated from spectral reflectance as potential indicators ( Oryza sativa L.) photosynthetic apparatus affected by root oxygen types. experiments showed that changed with different treatments. Principal component analysis...

Abstract The use of ground cover vegetation is becoming a prominent way promoting biodiversity and associated ecosystem services in Chinese orchards. Despite the large number studies that have addressed effects on natural enemy populations related pest control, it still unclear whether enhanced control can increase yield reduce pesticide. We performed an experiment comparing three practices (ryegrass, clover hairy vetch) versus bare commercial pear orchards Yangtze River Delta East China...

Abstract BACKGROUND Tri‐trophic interactions among plants, insect herbivores and entomopathogens are one of the hot topics in ecology. Although plants have been shown to impact between entomopathogens, it is still unclear how affect cellular immunity entomopathogens. RESULTS The number hemocytes proportion two main cell types (granular plasmatocytes), plasmatocyte‐spreading rate, apoptosis Spodoptera exigua caspase ( Se Casp‐1, Casp‐5) activities gene expressions were all higher expression...

Host plants have an effect on the susceptibility of lepidopteran insects to nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV), but role protein in peritrophic membrane (PM) larvae has not been investigated. We determined a key PM gene (SeIIM8 gene) Spodoptera exigua (Hübner), which plays protecting against NPV infection. Then we quantified activity chitin synthase (SeCHS), content insect intestinal mucin (SeIIM) and expression their genes S. fed one four foods (artificial diet, Brassica oleracea (L.), Glycine max...
