An optimization of a Stepped-Frequency Continuous Wave (SFCW) radar for contactless fall detection and tag-less localization is presented discussed. First results from a study on tunable frequency-selective surfaces (FSSs) used for beam-steering applications are reported. In particular, the scattering response of multilayer passband FSS based varactor-loaded rectangular slots has been investigated.
