More men are studying and working in science fields than women. This could be an effect of the prevalence gender stereotypes (e.g., is for men, not women). Aside from media people's social lives, such can also occur education. Ways which visible education include use gender-biased visuals, language, teaching methods, teachers' attitudes. The goal this study was to determine whether resources primary school contained visuals. Specifically, total number women depicted, profession activity each...
Leading academic institutions, governments, and funders of research across the world have spent last few decades fretting publicly about need for scientists organisations to engage more widely with public be open their research. While a global literature asserts that communication has changed from virtue duty in many countries disciplines, our knowledge what institutions are doing factors drive 'going public' is very limited. Here we present first cross-national study N = 2,030 institutes...
Astronomers have played many roles in their engagement with the larger astronomy education ecosystem. Their activities served both formal and informal communities worldwide, levels of involvement from occasional participant to full-time professional. We discuss these diverse roles, giving background, context, perspective on value encouraging improving education. This review covers large amounts new research best practices for learning environments. evidence-based can support astronomers...
The number of women and underrepresented individuals working in science, technology, engineering mathematics (STEM) fields does not reflect the diversity our societies. Even if children have an interest STEM, they may consider choosing a study or career that direction their perception is would belong science. This examines effects STEM lesson series aimed at inclusivity on children's sense belonging space Before after series, filled out questionnaire eliciting science scientists. After...
A large study of science communicators around the world was conducted as part GlobalSCAPE research project. All participants in indicated some level communication experience, with more than 11% choosing “citizen scientist” one their identities. This paper provides an overview how and citizen are two independent fields practice that have opportunities for overlap mutually beneficial outcomes, particularly terms practices those working areas public engagement science. In addition, qualitative...
Scientists can help by partnering with museums, out-of-school programs, schools, organizations that develop instructional materials, or other educational projects.
The COVID-19 global pandemic has transformed the relationship between science and society. ensuing public health crisis placed aspects of this in harsh relief; perceptions scientific credibility, risk, uncertainty, democracy are all publicly debated ways unforeseen before pandemic. This unprecedented situation presents opportunities to reassess how certain disciplines contribute understanding science. Space education long provided a lens through which people can consider intersection natural...
Over the past few years, there have been a studies on development of an interest in science and scientists' views public outreach. Yet, to date, has no global study regarding astronomers' these matters. Through completion our survey by 155 professional astronomers online person during 28th International Astronomical Union General Assembly 2012, we explored their for astronomy time constraints budget restriction outreach activities. We find that develop between ages 4-6 but decision undertake...
Measuring scientific development is a difficult task. Different metrics have been put forward to evaluate development; in this paper we explore metric that uses the number of peer-reviewed, and when available non-peer-reviewed articles, research articles as an indicator field astronomy. We analyzed publication record, using SAO/NASA Astrophysics Database System, by country affiliation time span between 1950 2011 for countries with Gross National Income less than 14,365 USD 2010. This...
How can a game be used to motivate students towards specific scientific area and, at the same time, support those in development of personal and social skills? eCity online is an educational platform based on city simulation engine designed Problem Based Learning (PBL) STEM area. The high school for academic course science engineering helping solve one current problems society: lack professionals these areas. Initial results have been promising motivation satisfaction involved teachers.
Time spent performing public engagement is severely undervalued by research institutions around the globe. In this article we present one possible system that could be implemented to provide researchers with career recognition for vital work. The framework utilises supervision already in place at many institutions, whereby senior mentor their junior colleagues. This would encourage more engage public, as well increasing quality of engagement.
The GlobalSCAPE research project was tasked with engaging people working in science communication to better understand their views of the field. While being a European-based project, aimed connect communicators across globe. This practice insight paper reflects on lessons learned from GlobalSCAPE, successes and failures, what might be done continue work global projects. It is hoped that such learnings will broad interest communities grappling ways fund support around world.
Hundreds of thousands astronomy education activities exist, but their discoverability and quality is highly variable. The web platform for activities, astroEDU, presented in this paper tries to solve these issues. Using the familiar peer-review workflow scientific publications, astroEDU improving standards quality, visibility accessibility, while providing credibility activities. targets activity guides, tutorials other educational area education, prepared by teachers, educators specialists....
